Repair your Ketsui PCB... sunshine story :-)

This just might interest some ... or very few. But I just might help some of you in the future.

Background:I let on of my friend borrow my Ketsui PCB, and disaster struck ... . Well, no worries it's just a game ...

As we didn't solve the problem I contacted Yumi @ FujitaCommunications Ltd (http://www.fujitacommunications.com) in order to see if they could help me to fix the problem or act as a middleman between me an CAVE.
Well, to make the story short I shipped the PCB to Fujita and got a fairly quick response .. "... then PCB is sent to CAVE ....". & one week later ... ".... you PCB just got back from CAVE.... working"

I just got back the PCB today, and everything is working fine

For what I can see, I got more or less the same PCB back from CAVE. But there are some confusing differences. Just look at the pictures:

A closer look a the label, it's the same PCB, but some of the surface mounted components has been replace...

Summary:
- Some of the surface mounted components has been replaced (don't understand how, seems impossible for me)
- As I wasn't able to force Freeplay crash (Section 3.2, http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=9528 thanx rtw, you rock) I assume that the old EPROM has been upgraded to the revised version.
- The PCB has been cleaned
- Battery has been replaced

Cost:
Repair: JPY 23 000:-
EMS: JPY 28 00:-
PayPal: JPY 1 340:-
+ shipping to Fujita and custom service.

.... if some of you hardware nerds wants better pictures of the PCB, please just PM you e-mail.

I was tempted to do the same with my dead DOJ PCB, but it didn't seem worth the cost relative to what the PCB costs to replace.

Isn't the price for DOJ at YHJ about 30kYen?! Probably not worth to send to CAVE.

Yes, as far as i can see the label is intact. You can't see it on the pictures, the two "scratched" parts looks brand new (you can clearly see the print)!! I will try to take some more close-up pictures tonight.

At the risk of ruining a bit of the mystique, there are tools made specifically to do this kind of work (the industry jargon is "rework"). Hot air is often used for SMD stuff like this. The workstation units designed for repair/rework even have little hoods to fit each package type, ensuring that the solder melts at the same time around the chip and that no nearby components get scorched. There are also methods to replace these kinds of chips "manually" with a conventional iron, the right tip, and MAD SKILLZ. Here's a guy who somehow makes it look easy to get extremely nice results.
