What is essential is always open to debate but in terms of shmups you shouldn't miss:
Sengoku Blaede
And one that may not be essential but is great fun is:
Blast Wind.
Now, in terms of quasi-shmups there are a lot of good ones such as:
Assault Suit Leynos 2
Panzer Dragoon trilogy
Mass Destruction
Bulk Slash

I've got no love for Guardian Heroes either. It's VASTLY overrated as it comes from Treasure, the most overhyped developer known to man. If you want to play a good game with that type of gameplay Dungeons & Dragons Collection is far superior on the Saturn, as is Panzer Bandit on the PSX.Diabollokus wrote:bulk slash dont' know that one have to check it out, i need to be careful though bought guardian heroes and I'm not loving it.

I have just gotten into the whole collecting Saturn shmups business, and the game I'm hunting down now is Dodonpachi. Have played the MAME verison and was wondering if the Saturn port is 100% arcade-perfect as far as graphics and gameplay is concerned. I was gonna hunt down Garegga, but $100 is a pretty steep price for me right now.
Shmups: It's all about blowing stuff up!

Its fairly close as far as the arcade is concerned (or so I'm told), but the PS1 version has no slowdown (Neon would probably mention something about explosions, but I've never paid much mind to sound effects).

Guardian Heroes isn't bad,
But not everyone will enjoy it.
The classicgaming review actually favors it over Panzer Bandit.
You could try getting Kingdom Grandprix and Gun-Frontier.
There;s always the Salamander Deluxe Pack if you don't already have the PSX version.

Are you german or is that just a weird typo? I ask because of 'goot'--In German final consonants are devoiced (voicing means the vocal chords vibrate, as in /d/, voiceless means no vibration, as in /t/), hence 'good' might be pronounced 'goot' by a German accent.Bar81 wrote: Metal Black is not goot

guardian heroes, yes i can see why people like it theres more happening some times than marvel vs capcom 2 but its not streets of rage, I will play though and beat it but I can see me selling it in the near future, think its partly down to being sold a bad conditioned copy, the desciption was excellent condition with a few scratches but far from it, the case was bleached, warped and disc was a 6/10 rating, bit pissed off from the moment i played it so that may be part of the reason + i've yet to try 2 player or more so not 100% yet.
Battle garegga? $100 is worth it if you can get it that cheap I paid a lot more, the music remix's double as an album alone i love track 30 makes we think of a preying mantis in a rap/metal song.(last boss remix). Its very bloody fast and intense as you know from mame though.
Dodonpachi is great simple as that its actually quite long in saturn mode with the extra level and that extra boss encounter, only critique is the explosions are pixilated in arcade mode but who cares its no slowdown at all!
if you get 5 saturn shmups honestly heres all I say: battle garegga, radiant silvergun, dodonpachi, batsugun, soukyugurentai.
Hyper duel probably deserves to be in there but not played it yet.
Metal Black? i don't know its playable in mame + I own border down so its debatable for owning, the reviews and shots don't draw me in like hyper duel.
Blast wind? I'd probably like it being a technosoft fan, yet mame is still an option to test it first.

Off topic: Word! D&D Col. is very cool, just wish it would've came over here in the US. Panzer Bandit is awesome. The hack/slash/repeat gameplay can get tedious, but hey, thats why we call em hack&slashers, right?Bar81 wrote:I've got no love for Guardian Heroes either. On topic: Wow! I paid around $80 for Garegga, but it is a must. I know several peeps around here have said the gameplay is deep, and that ain't no lie!

Blast Wind and Hyper Duel would be the next 2 essentials. Pricey... yes, but being Saturn exclusive releases gives them that shiney, must-have appearance.

Check out the following thread, should help more than I can in one post:

It's a classic case of why fanboyism is ungood - each of the systems has better versions of certain games. Vampire Saviour is better on Saturn, DDP is better on PSX, etc. well not ENTIRELY better since the crappier ports have extras, but you get the drift.
It's just weak to me. The graphics, gameplay, all of it. It's not fun nor special. It just pales miserably in comparison to other shmups on every system imo.jp wrote:Bar81 wrote:Metal Black is not gootjp wrote:I can vouch for Blast Wind. I love that game to death.

Why?I still can't figure out whats wrong with it. Yes, its infernally cheap, but it is 1CCable as I've done it.
Nah not German, but I just love that phrase so I use it when appropriatetwe wrote:Are you german or is that just a weird typo? I'd be willing to sell you my copy if you're interested. The graphics are a bit pixelly and it seems to move faster than MAME, but other than it it's the same thing. Oh, and there is an extra level in Saturn mode, which is a cool extra, even if it's not that great.FatCobra wrote:I have just gotten into the whole collecting Saturn shmups business, and the game I'm hunting down now is Dodonpachi. Chatting Parodius definitely shouldn't be on a maybe list, it's a great game. It's my favorite Parodius, but all the Parodii are gold. Shienryu is also pretty good if you're into that sort of thing, early 90s protomanics, Raiden/Toaplan homages.
I'll second Kingdom Grandprix. It's my favorite Raizing game, doesn't seem to have any infuriatingly arbitrary rank and has a nice simple twitch feel to it, despite the racing gimmick.
I'm also partial to Kyuukyoku Tiger II Plus. Not essential by any stretch of the word, but quality stuff. I'm biased though, any shmup with a helicopter is ace in my book. (Play on the player 2 side, the green weapon is the shizit.)

Chatting parodius, Lets just say I haven't played my copy of sexy yet(in transit) so if I love it I'll definetly buy it seems to got quite cheap like the delux pack + i could always do with a good side scroller. Only got darius gaiden for sat.
Sengoku blaede hard call, the price tag is high I'll keep an open mind.
Kingdom grandprix, I don't understand the point of the game yet, are you racing a friend to the boss? the bosses look great though and music is not bad.
Yes I'm leaving thunder force V alone, I've watched the master rank replays maybe 6 times the music is great I'd buy it for soundtrack but its not thunder force 4, the lack of interaction with the levels is off putting. It seems rather easy half the bosses in the game don't fight back for more than 10 seconds I want a trip though hell.
Shienruy seems to get mixed reviews its slated as a donpachi wanabe and raiden clone, how is it graphically heard something about a white ship that looks cell shaded sounds cool.

The graphics are ok, middle of the road. Definitely not as impressive as RSG, Sengoku Blaede, or Battle Garegga.Diabollokus wrote:

Well, those replays are probably from expert players. The bosses don't usually go down so easy. Yeah, it's not too hard a game, but that doesn't make it a bad game. You seem to like Thunder Force 4, I think you owe it yourself to at least try TFV. It's not like there's no resale market, you can just put it on the Trading Forum or eBay if it isn't your cup of tea. You can't possibly claim to have completed your Saturn shmup collection if you haven't tried one of its crown jewels.Diabollokus wrote: Yes I'm leaving thunder force V alone, I've watched the master rank replays maybe 6 times the music is great I'd buy it for soundtrack but its not thunder force 4, the lack of interaction with the levels is off putting. To be completely honest with you, I don't think you're missing out on that much. Yes, it has some nice nostalgic moments, but the gameplay is nowhere near as great as TFIII or IV. It IS better than II though... and thus probably better than the original... but thats where it stops.
You want an awesome Tecno Soft hori? Hyper Duel. Totally dominates all over TFV.

You want hell? Don't use the Free Range weapon. Many of the bosses will last forever and drive you nuts if you try anything else on them.Diabollokus wrote:Yes I'm leaving thunder force V alone...It seems rather easy half the bosses in the game don't fight back for more than 10 seconds I want a trip though hell.

But then your score sucks and the game becomes pointlessly frustrating. *shrugs*
