I'd say it's mostly a lighting / effects difference.
For speed sake, videogames have to use very simplified lighting models which can't compete with ray-tracing and other features Mental Ray and such offer. Models like that could probably be seen in videogames (prelit), but if lights are dynamic (and move), you're screwed, it won't look natural

Maya for modeling and Mental Ray for rendering (already inside Maya) according to the artist. Love Ikaruga and the model is not bad but far from amazing.
