List of recent LCDs that pivot to portrait mode (TATE)

Post by vercimber »

Okay, so I'm convinced, after playing with Mushihime Futari 1.5, that I need to play the game in TATE mode. Unfortunately, my primary TV is a 46" LCD, and I'm not about to try TATEing it.

I'm in the market for a recently-released monitor that can switch to portrait mode physically (i.e., without the use of a Neo Flex or Ergotron stand/arm). I've found a few online, but I want a complete list of these monitors so that I can do side-by-side comparisons. I do want HDMI/VGA interfaces, for example.

Can anybody point me to a good site that offers this sort of list/comparison chart for monitors that switch to portrait mode?

Thanks!

Can't help with a list but we've got some NEC 2180UX (21" LCD) monitors at work which are nice and robust.

They rotate anti clockwise too, most of the others rotate clockwise. DVI and VGA inputs only though.

The 2180UX is hands-down the best videogame monitor ever built by NEC. Not a monster in terms of response-time (what can you expect of a 5-year old pro-grade graphic display), but completely lag-free. Love my setup :)

You can change the rotation direction easily. Just unscrew the display, turn 90°, screw it back again to the stand. Done.

Over at my local Staples, I went ahead & bought an 3M brand LCD monitor stand with built-in portrait mode. If your PC LCD monitor doesn't have portrait mode built-in, this is a fine alternative to get if you want this particular option. It'll set you back at $49.99 USD though.

I wanted to Tate my 55" oled but couldnt find any table top pivoting vesa stand..

Thought I might as well treat myself to rotating monitor as they seem easier to source
I did want built in speakers thou in the monitor and thats not so easy to find....

Had to compromise ABIT as 120hz would have been nice but it's mainly to Tate my switch & Xbox 360 shmups...

Settled on this dell 27" but if I've missed a 32" that would have done everything I want or a 27" that might be better please let me know as delivery not til Thursday, thnx in advance

£245 I paid

This is what I have -

I will get the 1440p LG OLED next - https://www.overclockers.co.uk/lg-27-ul ... 6z-lg.html

Any LG ultragear IPS will do. Steer clear of VA monitors as they will blur with fast speed.

My older monitors are Dell. U2414H.

None of my monitors have VGA. They have mini display port, display port and 2 x HDMI.

Does the NEC 2180Ux monitor support 15.7kHz signal? I notice that it has a VGA D-Sub input + both DVI-A & DVI-D inputs as well.

You probably noticed, but you're responding to a post from 2009. At this point there are countless better options if you combine a modern display with a modern retro-gaming scaler.

Yes, a 2024 guide would be great!

Maybe 4:3 monitor options have almost not evolved since then, but I think there are a lot of 24” and 27” 2560x1440p resolution monitors with option to show image in 1920x1440p (4:3) that integer scales 240p, 480p and 720p.

Maybe the problem is those monitors run great under high hz and native resolution, but when moved to 1920x1440p and 60hz, lag/response time increase ?

So, you're planning on buying an expensive monitor and sitting close to the screen.

Instead of using a Retrotink4k to get tate and complete scanout ~4ms after a CRT with a 60Hz input and 240Hz output (with optional BFI), you're going to go with a specific (and probably inferior) model to rotate the physical monitor? My numbers are confirmed with a lag tester and no longer controversial (shouldn't have been in the first place, it's obvious).

You do you. I question that decision.

I'd seriously consider pairing the monitor you actually want with a Tink4k instead.

There are plenty of 27" ones. Solid and affordable for example: Dell S2725HS.

Pivoting 32" are rarer. The Dell P3223 does, but it doesn't have speakers. And speaking of speakers: remember that these are both on one side when you're using the display in tate mode, so that's probably not ideal in terms of stereo separation.

I bought some creative labs pebble speakers for £20 for my setup. Amazon has them, they do the job.
