Would you play a Shmup with rap music in the background?
Good question i was playing Chaos Field(Dreamcast version)finally beat it when it dawned on me. Would rap music sound good in a Shmup for me i guess not. Techno,Trance,House and Drum & Bass are truly the Shmup sound.
My playlist: Mars Matrix,Chaos Field and Zero Gunner 2

I can't imagine this being a serious topic, but fuck I would throw this shit out of the window.Maikeru_Rocks wrote:Can you imagine playing Ikaruga with sounds of 50 Cent.

It's entirely dependent on the game. I'd say that using disco music in a shmup would suck ass, but Dangun Feveron proves that it can work out if you have the right game. Same goes for any type of music. Could you imagine Ikaruga with a DoDonPachi style metal soundtrack? *shudder* Or for that matter, DoDonPachi with Ikaruga's soundtrack? *shudder*

Most of the shmups I play don't have the option to turn off the in-game music, so in order to hear the sound effects, which are helpful in playing, I am forced to hear the music as well.
What I'm getting at is that I don't normally play music on a stereo while playing, because the in-game music interferes. If I can turn off the music and keep the sound effects, then yeah, I like to play some other music, but not rap. To me, rap is all about the words and the attitude. Other than that it's just a back-beat. I'd rather hear music.

SHOOT IT QUICKLY !
I really can't imagine it would work. Now, I admit I don't know anything about rap, but as I understand it's all about the lyrics. Lyrics in a shmup BGM = no. Alright, so there are few instances of that (Parodius), but c'mon...rap?
But hey, I'd keep an open mind. Maybe if the whole shmup was built around a rap-theme. Whenever the you hear something about bling-bling, collect gold rings for double bonus points! Boss comes on the screen: "Smack that ho!"

No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Sure I would, depending on the game. Some music helps me do better on some games...for example, I like to listen to Flogging Molly while I play Mars Matrix. Of course, some games' music is perfect like Chaos Field's drumnbass/breakbeats or Psyvariar's techno. Border Down on the other hand sounds better with hard rock if you ask me. Its fun to try mixing up your gaming soundtracks to see what fits the game play best.

I also agree that rap music would be quite appropriate for an urban themed side scrolling brawler. It would be kind of cool to see a gritty, urban styled shmup, and well done rap tunes could work...original to the game, of course. Having said that, I'm rather surprised that this thread has gotten the attention it has.

50 cent? yeah I can imagine blood shooting outta my nose as I experience a severe Lewis Black sized aneurism. No offense but trash music like 50 cent's untalented, low grunting and mumbling about being a pimp with a death wish doesn't belong next to audio visual gravy like Ikaruga.Maikeru_Rocks wrote:Can you imagine playing Ikaruga with sounds of 50 Cent. Beastie Boys seems way more suited to shmupping. Throw in some Intergalactic or Mic Control, now THAT'S shmup music if ya wanna talk rap. I can also imagine listening to Hey Ya by Outcast while playing Parodius or Star Parodia on my Duo.

Now, THAT is a great idea. Those songs would definitely be excellent shmup music.Dylan1CC wrote:

I would definitely say that rap would ruin any game for me. The rap in the background of knuckle's levels in Sonic adventure 2 were painful! I think the term 'music' don't really apply to rap as it is more about the words and a beat. Really it is a modern form of poetry--although from the rap that I've heard I think 'poetry' is far too complimentary. For a shmup you want to hear music that is both epic, majestic, and fast. Music where the musician's actually had to have some skill to compose and play. I really miss the days when Ts music was putting out shmup soundtracks (Lords of Thunder, Super Darius 2, Sapphire, etc.) and wish more modern shmups would go back in that direction--I don't think the more modern techno style is as good, although it is at least a lot better than rap! I also thought the classical style of Giga Wing 2 was nice.
I'm not a big fan of rap. I like the Beastie Boys, and I listen to some other stuff occasionally, like Public Enemy or Run DMC.
I wouldn't play a shmup with rap in it, not because it had rap in it, but because of how I would imagine a shmup with rap music would look and play like. I can't imagine rap in any normal shmup. It would have to be some attempt to make it gritty and tough. And that has gotta suck. I'll stick with the techno.

No slight to rap or hip-hop, but I think the music is ill-suited to shmups. Similarly (though the music is not particularly similar), try to imagine playing a shmup to jazz. The music just doesn't fit. The music to Raiden (perhaps some of the best matched shmup music) has its roots in metal (whether it sounds particularly metal is irrelevant, the chord progressions are the same). Personally I think this style of music is best for most shmups, but Giga Wing 2 showed that a more symphonic score could work just as well.
In general I've noticed the best video game music is rooted in classical or metal (or in the case of Symphony of the Night, both), and I've found these musics do a better job of creating the appropriate feel for most video games.
Rap just doesn't seem like the sort of music that would get me pumped to play a video game.
