PCE-CD Spriggans...

Post by Damocles »

Xenocide files lists Seirei Senshi Spriggan and Spriggan as PCE-CD games. What's SSS, and how does it differ from regular Spriggan?

To my knowledge there are two Spriggans on the PCE

Seirei Senshi Spriggan
Spriggan Mark 2 (a.k.a. utter shit)

IIRC they are the same. Spriggan Mk. II is an entirely different shooter though (horizontal even).

So just a name difference between the JP and E/U versions? The differing years of release threw me.

There is no US or Euro version of Seirei Senshi Spriggan. It's a fuck up in the database, Spriggan is just an abreviation for Seirei Senshi Spriggan, there is no seperate Spriggan game.

True, but there is a Euro Turbo Grafx.

Supposedly it played the US versions, and was more or less the same machine as the Turbografx except for the lighter shade of grey.

I´ve never actually seen one or even heard of anybody owning this. Was it in fact released, or was it just planned?

It was apparently a limited release in only some Euro zones:

There's some nice info at NFG's site and forums: Insides of a PAL Turbo Grafx
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

The first Spriggan was supposed to get a US release, but the system tanked before it could come out.

We missed out on a few other really good games in this batch as well, such as "Nexzar".

The two Spriggans are totally different, but both great fun IMO. The first game is a little better designed, but really easy - jack up the difficulty if you want a challenge!

I have the hardest time killing that Dark Knight/Wizard boss as the end of level... uh... 7? The castle stage with the little axe-throwing dudes and rolling boulders. Yeah, he sucks. I've only managed to beat him a few times. And then there's level 8, with the super-fast backwards scrolling and a spam of nearly invincible space junk. Gah, I hope that's the last level.

I loooove Spriggan 1. Compile goodness in a fantasy setting? I'm sold. On normal is it quite easy though... Also, the fact that Spriggan is a regular CD game (not a super CD game) is amazing... definitely the most "advanced" regular CD game I'm aware of. Soooo much stuff on the screen at once... I love it.

2 is good as well, although a lot of people don't like it. Their loss.

As others have pointed out, there is "Seirei Senshi Spriggan" and "Spriggan Mark 2 Re Terraform Project".

Seirei Senshi Spriggan = Spirit Fighter Spriggan

SM2 plays out a lot like an Assault Suits Valken game. Which is a very good thing in my book. It is also Compile's only hori shmup, afaik
