I like phalanx quite a bit. If this comes stateside and it is an actual new game instead of just the original game, I'll get it.

I'd also love to see that spin-off game from Zero Divide... Phalanx Micro? Mini? Something like that. That would be a fantastic re-release as a full-fledged game.

Edit: TINY Phalanx, that was it.

Kemco lives! I've been wondering why they haven't ported it to Virtual Console. Now will this play like the SNES version or the MSX version (or even the GBA version)? Graphics look like the MSX version, which might be a shame, because I actually like how the SNES version plays more.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

Don't you mean the X68000 version?

According to this while the game will be mostly based on the X68K version, it's actually a remake which will add some new stuff (no idea what, of course).

One of the first shmups I ever owned, and I really liked it. I sucked at it, and used tons of continues on the later stages (the one near the end with the huge mothership with tiny, tiny corridors sucked), but overall it was a good game. I remember there was also a GBA port, which I think was supposed to be easier, but I never played it.

The GBA port of Phalanx featured anime cutscenes along with rendered CGI cutscenes between stages.

I demand they incorporate the boxart from the US SNES release into the title screen:

Every Western shooter localisation should use that cover as a template. Just swap in the right ship and logo. Seriously, this would be a good idea. Why mess about with this or that ugly Illvelo US cover when Farmer Bob's proven mainstream star power is right there to be exploited?

Looks as though they've just cleaned up and simplified some of the sprites, so far - here's hoping it'll contain some new stages.

I would love if they added Tiny Phalanx as a cameo, or implemented its game mechanics.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

So according to GoNintendo, the game will feature "new gameplay elements". I hope they're referring to this.

Perhaps they added some cutscenes starring the Banjo Dude. Between each level he leaps out of the cockpit, raises his banjo in the air and yells in incomprehensible digitized broken engrish "Aiym Bwad!"

Were there any major differences between the MSX and SNES versions of Phalanx aside from a missile limit in the former?

The changes in the port definitely made it easier. Your ship's HP was increased from 3 to 4, max weapons you could carry was increased from 3 to 4, and you were given 3 standard screen-clearing bombs on top of that. Also, your pilot's name was "Riki Sanada" instead of "Wink Baufield" (ugh).

Where did Dimension Force come into this? Well, besides being one of the first SNES shmups, anyway...

Now, if either Wiiware or XBLA would just get around to releasing Super Darius (knowing Hudson's buddy-buddy relationship with Nintendo, probably the former)...

More gameplay footage.

And they have an official website now.

Looks good. The outline on the sprites kind of irks me, but it's nothing.

What the hell happened at 1:16 in the video?

I think I actually kinda like the thick outlines. They give a bit of extra character, sorta like inking in cartoons/anime.

Gonintendo says this'll have new stages, but I'm not seeing anything new in that trailer. The only thing I notice is at 1:25, but that might just be the SNES stage 2 hidden stage with a different background.

:?
quite disappointing : it's ugly, wii mode is... well... let's say with no interest... (just minor graphic changes, very few concerning gameplay...), scores are not even saved, no online ranking...

The intro is great !
Well, the intro is great...

Gotta play it though : must have missed something !

Admit it. You all bought the game because of the epic cover art.

Don't forget the #1 thing that made the GBA port easier: yellow bullets you could actually SEE, instead of tiny red dots that blend into the background.

I thought this was discussed in like 5 threads in the last already. Theoretically, it was to make the game stand out. I mean... Super R-Type. Gradius 3. R-Type 3. Darius Twin. The US versions all had the exact same god-damned cover art. Suddenly, you see Pharmer Joe and a spaceship whizzing by. You can't tell me you wouldn't at least turn the plexiglass "page" of a case to see what it was. Turns out it's another shmup. But it looks fucking awesome, and it has a crazy old guy playing a banjo on the cover. So instead of getting some garbage like Mario Is Missing or Mario's Time Machine, you beg your mom and/or dad to get this one instead.

Not speaking from experience, unfortunately. I didn't get hardcore into shmups until about 2004. Just saying, I could see that scenario accounting for at least half of Phalanx's sales in the US.

How did such an anonymous shmup end up with so many ports over so many years, anyway?
