Hudson's upcoming PSP title Star Soldier features some crazy-ass TATE play. According to the picture in the shot below, the blaster(bomb?) is the shoulder button and the main shot is set to either the circle or square button. If they'll include a button-config setting.
i duno whether i support or against it until i try it..but i know for damn sure ill buy it just to get the feel of tate mode...if that doesnt work it, theres always the "normal" mode..but its definetely interesting to see how its gonna work...
The cave whore count in this thread is unbelievable!!!
If this is the same game as the PS2/Gamecube Star Soldier then this will be a treat. It looks similar, and the idea of playing that game in full vertical mode is awesome. I don't care if its a bit odd to hold. I would kill for a proper tate shmup on a portable. The Wonderswan was a cool design, but it never got much shmup love (one game only really), so the PSP is going to have to be the heir to the portable shmupping throne. It's a simple game anyway, and I can't imagine you'll need any more than two buttons.
Poly Star Soldier still looks a little "meh" but seeing a shmup in roomy widescreen TATE has me drooling. OTOH one is gonna wanna be sure to be gripping their PSP a little firmer than usual when playing this title.
It's too bad their isn't some sort of secondary button to the right of the analog nub which could be mapped to fire. Or an even crazier scenario, how about mapping the home button to fire? But if that were even possible it'd be rediculous and would just wear the button out. Anyways, I may just get this assuming I have enough extra $ after I get DDP DOJ and Mushi. Here's hoping it doesn't force one to update their firmware.

The last two PSP games I've bought, intelligent licence and Space Invaders Pocket, have both had updates to 1.5 on them. I think updating is going to be pretty hard to avoid. I only hope that the PSP home-dev community can catch up with these updates.

It will. The system is wide-open. It's only a matter of time before a program or even a mod-chip surface.
It would seem that we U.S psp'ers are sort of screwed on the firmware front as 1.5 would appear to be launch day standard.
According to Hudson's Japanese website, there's an Auto Rapid Fire setting (much like in Forgotten Worlds on MD/Genesis), so you have the option of turning that on, which means you won't have to press a button to fire (your ship will always be firing).

D'oh.

Yeah, hopefully they will figure out some firmware work-around patches that can be loaded onto the memory stick when the emu is started. *crosses fingers* [/quote]
