Self Destruct (freeware shmup)

Post by Ruldra »

Haven't seen a thread about this game yet, and apparently it's been out for over a year. Seems to be a pretty good shmup. Anyone here tried it already?

Youtube video

Game ends when you reach wave 250. Online scoreboard available (go ahead and try to beat Plasmo's 2nd place score).

EDIT: Ha! I'm #48 now.

Looks interesting. So you basically crash right through the bullets and collect those white hexagons to keep you alive?

There's some seriously nice low-res pixel art there.

You have to absorb bullets with your shield to keep whatever the current level of your weapon is, upgraded. Otherwise, your weapon is constantly downgrading on its' own. Collecting green hexies will increase your shield. F drops are increased fire power and X or whatever the yellow hex is, is a bomb pick-up. You only get 1 bomb per use. Kinda cool, but i dont like the whole diminishing weapon or maybe the weapon decreases way too fast.

Quite entertaining little Shmup, with great music, too!
However, playing it for highscore really sucks. It's based on complete randomness if you're score is 500k higher or lower. You just need to get lucky, to get a lot of the enemy waves with the laser guys.
Seems like I'm down to #2 now. :? Didn't play since April or something and tbh almost forget about it. And maybe that's a good thing, I won't play it again anyway (see reasons above)

Some random tips to score better in the game:

- Motherships and carriers are the most valuable targets, shoot down as much as you can
- Let go of the fire button to conserve your power level. Keeping your power high is vital here
- Avoid using the bomb. Enemies destroyed with it won't give you points and extra bomb items are worth a lot of points
- You get more points per second the longer you go without activating the shield. Don't abuse of this too much though, you need to use it to power up your weapon

Currently #33. I think I can break top 20 soon, and then I'll try to shoot for top 10.

I was wondering about this. I haven't had a chance to play it yet, but thanks for the clarification.

Somewhat Compile-like in nature, I might give this a whirl.

Wow! A bit late to the party (again!) but this game is so great. The pace and mechanics are brilliant but the randomnesss of the enemy waves does indeed fuck it for scoring.
Self Destruct was made for a competition in procedural generation so the randomness of the waves is integral to the concept of the original game but if only someone could remake this with fixed repeatable enemy waves then this would be a truly great game!!!
Then memorisation would also become part of the gameplay and the scores would be on a level playing field.
Anyway, in pace and design it kinda reminds me of Zero Rei which is one of my all time favourites so I'm really loving this for all it's randomness :D

Really surprised at how much scores were improved since I left. I thought Plasmo had reached the maximum score possible but now people are scoring 400k more points :o

At one point I was like #6 but now I'm #17.

I'm on 13th place in the leaderboards right now. I downloaded the online version yesterday and shown my best shot in the first try but sucked. Later today, I came back to this game to see how I can do it again. The result is really great, but the scoring is really scarce here because of randomness. Plus, you would never know how many motherships would come out on both sides during the last 100 waves. Besides, I'm just two paces away from Plasmo.

Expect a video to be uploaded later + some sh*t demos regarding How NOT to deal with the following enemies.
