Hmm Disney had great games at one time!?

Post by Pixel_Outlaw »

I just picked up Castle of Illusion, for 3 bucks and I must say that the game is actually quite good. I had Quackshot Starring Donald Duck before and I always liked it. It is really funny how the sprite quality in these cartoon games has gone down the toilet in recent years. I say it is funny because you look at the quality of the games on the Sega Genesis and you can't help but like the dramatic sprite work. Then you look at modern disney games on more powerful systems like the Gameboy Advance and suddenly everyone has forgotten how to put time into sprites.

I'm really liking these old Disney games for a bit of nostalgia. Even though they are sort of childish in subject matter I find them very fun. I don't mind playing them if they are well made and entertaining.

So I have:
Quackshot: Starring Donald Duck
Castle of Illusion: Starring Mickey Mouse

Are there other games in the series I should consider getting? It is just funny how good games used to be for kids. I say "for kids" but there is something here too for the adult to enjoy. I think Japan should be making Disney games if anyone should. They did quite an impressive job with a license that was foreign.

Lots of Capcom's Disney-licensed NES games are worth looking at. Ducktales and Rescue Rangers are both very good.

Ok cool, I do have Rescue Rangers and it is pretty good. So NES games are cool here too.

Actually, most of the 16 bit Disney games are more or less awesome. Castle of Illusion is one of the best platformers full stop. World of Illusion, while not in the same league as its predecessor, is a still solid title. Then there's Aladdin on the Megadrive, not to be confused with the SNES game by Capcom which a different title altogether (still good, though). And speaking of which, Capcom's three Magical Adventure games. And finally, Mickey Mania by Traveller's Tales. Oh, and Lion King, that's good too.

I remember someone saying something like this before and I agree: pretty much all Disney games from the 8-bit and 16-bit ages are worth playing outside of Mickey's Ultimate Challenge. The Jungle Book versions are good. Hell, even the Beauty & the Beast games are solid.

On the flipside Darkwing Duck is pretty awful. It takes what is the traditional joy of walking left to right in a platformer into a horrific stop and go traffic jam of misery.

This I find disappointing, as Darkwing is a badass and deserved a better game. What the hell Capcom, you made Rockman the rockingest game of all time.

All those games were awesome because they were developed by people who knew what they were doing.

Then Disney Interactive/BVG launched Toy Story (which was really mediocre, IMHO), and everything started to go downhill afterwards.

I have Toy Story for the Genesis, I thought it was OK but nothing pretty.

I really like Aladdin on the snes - very easy but very polished. I got a SFC copy recently, just wondering if anyone knows: it seems like the western release had 1 extra stage (iirc it was in the palace and you were jumping across lilypads or something). Anyone able to confirm?

You jest, but my girlfriend runs an NES emulator on her phone and has that bitch locked down hard. She also runs the Jungle Book and Lion King games.

I believe the only Disney game I've played at length is Alladin for the Genny. Good stuff. Oh wait...I own Toy Story for the Genny as well. Not bad.

I like the Light Cycle mini game that is within the Tron Killer App GBA game from 2003. It's a lot of fun playing with more than just one person with AI light cycle opponents instead. It is pretty innovative that the camera zooms in on the player if he or she gets quite close to a light wall trace -- makes for some cool and exciting sessions. ^_~

The bonus arcade game emulation of Tron and Discs of Tron on the GBA game of Tron Killer App is spot on despite not having the proper tate screen. A rotary controller with it would be even better. ^_~

This particular GBA title has plently of digitized speech clips (a rarity in the GBA world). Even Bruce Boxleitner lent his trademarked voice to reprise his Tron role. ^_~

Some of the NES games were cool, the rest put me off greatly for the most part (probably due to extremely annoying renditions of the toons' musical score). As far as 16-bit Disney platformers go, I'll take Donkey Kong Country over any of them any day.

I though Fantasia was ok. It was a strange game. I finished it the weekend I rented it back in 1991 or so. I've heard some say it is difficult but I disagree, you just have to time your jumps perfectly.

Toy Story indeed was pretty meh.

Most games made by Virgin Interactive were pretty good, not just the Disney ones. Cool Spot, Global Gladiators, McDonald Land (AKA McKids) were all excellent games.

And of course, Mega-Drive Alladin was their finest hour. That game was really awesome. The PC and Amiga ports weren't as good.

I don't know if they even "developed" games, I guess they just were publishers, but those games have no information of a development team on the games...

I really thought the Mega Drive Aladdin sucked hard. In fact I hated most of the Virgin games - good animation but played really loose and crappy. I suppose I was comparing them to the Capcom licences I'd played which perhaps isn't very fair in hindsight.

I liked Toy Story. It definitely wasn't the end of good Disney games. That came with the 2D/3D hybrid 32-bit games IMO. Pocahontas was released afterward and even though almost nobody (except girls and hardcore sidescroller fans) played it, it's still an artistic masterpiece and one of the best Disney games. After Pocahontas was what I feel to be the slow demise of Disney games.

Honestly, I think Disney games came and went with the Disney Renaissance. After Tarzan came and 2D stretched its lifeless hand out of its grave for one last parting (that was good, but only a semblance of past greatness), Disney films and video games as we knew them disappeared.

I forgot what a quality game Quackshot really is. Here is the level I could never beat as a kid.

Another vote for MD / genesis Aladdin, Capcom's SNES one seems off to me. Haven't put enough time into either though...

Have Quackshot, should play that also.

Here's a vote for Mickey Mania, also - quality game with some crazy stuff in it.

Mainly played the SMS ones, although I've given all the 16-bit stuff a go at one point or another.

Lucky Dime Caper is simply superb albeit I found it particularly difficult at the time. One of my favourite platformers ever.

the SMS games are pretty cool too. Land of Illusion is very good, as The Lucky Dime Caper is (Did you really found it to be hard? I remember I finished the game when was like what? 10 or 11 years old, and it took me just 2 days to do it :D)

And Castle of Illusion is one of the few games that has a much superior version in the SMS than on Mega-Drive. The MD one is pretty good, but the SMS version is a masterpiece.

Just had to pop into this thread & give props for the mention of Quackshot. One of my first Genesis games, and still a long-time favorite. Not highly difficult, but just downright FUN to play :D

Land of Illusion SMS is good stuff. I just beat the final boss recently and found it to be a very charming game from start to finish. I also plan to get Castle of Illusion and Lucky Dime Caper. It's sweet how Land of Illusion runs at the correct speed in 60 Hz and I heard that Castle of Illusion and Lucky Dime Caper are the same way (Castle should be since it was released in the US and the version that EU got was released in Canada).

I found out that the GG version of Castle of Illusion is a SMS game on a GG cart, but I'm not sure if there are any major changes. The other GG games seem to be inferior versions with the usual adjustments for screen space and toned down difficulty (Lucky Dime caper especially since the levels seem more simplistic, there are more 1ups, Donald takes more hits, and Donald keeps the weapons when hit). GG frustrates me when it comes to SMS ports, but it does have nice games of its own like GG Shinobi 2 and the GG Aleste games.

While not a Disney game, I heard Asterix SMS is similar to Castle of Illusion and extremely good. I plan to pick that one up.

Surely all of that potion drinking/super jumping would have been perfect for a videogame.
