Metroid Prime Trilogy for Wii

Post by KindGrind »

Don't know if a thread exists anywhere else around here, but I picked this up, and it's excellent. Of course I'm a great fan of the games in general (a bit less love for MP2, but still) but I'd say the widescreen mode and controls are spot on. I've never had problems with the original controls though (if it ain't broken...) but I'm very surprised how it turned out. I've spent countless hours speedrunning the first Prime game, so I know it by heart, and there are lots of things that they changed to avoid very early sequence breaks, like Space Jump First. Still, many healthy glitches remain unchanged (which is good news imo) and the game is an absolute blast to play through.

At the price of one game, you could do a lot worse. Besides, my Wii was collecting dust like crazy. I hope these don't suicide if you don't power them on a couple of times in a year, 'cause mine is definitely at risk!

You forgot to mention missing special effects and grainier CG. I think Nintendo is trying to prove the Wii can't even do Gamecube graphics.

Extremely minor, and some of the missing graphics are because of changed game mechanics. If they were issuing them individually as full budget titles I might hear this, but it is a pretty insubstantial gripe given the circumstances.

Now if you want to gripe, there may be some room for griping about how they decided to handle the controls, but its certainly a huge step up from the GC controls.

Personally I didn't notice the grainier CG. Could it be because it is widescreen now?

If I didn't already have all three Prime games, I'd certainly buy this. The controls in Prime 3 are excellent, but I have to admit that a lot of Prime 1 and 2 (bosses in particular) are designed around the cube controls. Even so, if anybody doesn't have any of the Prime games this ought to be an immediate purchase.

I am just playing Prime through for the first time (well, second attempt) on GC. First time around I'd been playing a lot of FPS's and I spent more time fighting with the controls than anything else, I found the entire experience frustrating and unrewarding. I've literally never attempted it since up until yesterday, and several hours play has convinced me that I've missed out on one of the best games of the last decade. It's utterly meticulous in its design, so careful and considered that I'm completely baffled as to how I missed out first time around, control issues or not. I do still have problems with the controls, but not playing a lot of FPS's these days has made it a lot easier to adapt.

I missed it the very first time around, too. I rented the game, didn't know what to expect, and I didn't understand what I was doing. I was quite far into the game, but felt very clueless, always wondering: "I can't be doing the right thing!" I restarted a game this morning (first Prime), this time trying to forget my speedrunning background from these last few years. Quite a different experience, scanning things here and there, and actually using some save rooms I had totally forgotten existed, them being out my habitual route. Of course I tried some tricks along the way, but it seems they nerfed many of them, dulling some textures you used to be able to hold on to for example. Scan-dashing being gone, there are lots of things you can't do anymore either, like getting the space jump first, which was always very fun to do and made for crazy early pickups.

Very, very solid gameplay as ever, quite moody atmosphere. Great stuff.
