Wyvern Wings in the Wild!

Post by maxlords »

Was at a conference in Niagara Falls this week and my hotel had a tiny arcade. It had a couple classic emulator cabs, a Big Buck Hunter, a Sega Jamboree racer, and....a Wyvern Wings in a Capcom showcase cab! The monitor was shot...bowed picture, and the sticks were trashed Happ Neo Geo style ones, but god-damn it it was a Wyvern Wings!

That being said...I'd never played the game before. Got to the first boss without taking a hit, but got smoked on him a couple times. Didn't have to continue till midway through the 2nd level. This is one hell of a good shmup IMO! I suspect they had the difficulty down fairly far though. Is this a pretty popular shmup? I haven't heard a lot of talk about it but I really enjoyed it.

Now that I've played it....I kinda want one! What would it run? I'm sure it'll look a LOT better on my Egret too :D
<@scootnet> if you were a real gamer, you could jerk it to Super Metroid box art

Played this at a motel many years ago. Wasn't too impressed with it but it was still fun. Kind of reminded me of Stikers or Raiden Fighters. I'm pretty sure you can get this for $150ish.

The board is high rez (vga), is that correct? That's kept me from buying it.

That Semicom produced Wyvern Wings Space Opera PCB is a 15kHz low res game to begin with. It's been shown at the 2003 and 2004 California Extreme shows...reminds me of the famous Psikyo Strikers 1945 series of fine arcade shmups. Watching the staff roll credits are many South Korean guys who had a hand in developing this WW PCB. ^_~

Fellow shmupper sven666 is right on the money when a barebones WW PCB can be had for a mere $150 USD. Of course, a full WW PCB kit will fetch more...it was even distributed in the USA as well with full sized marquee included in the USA region WW PCB kits complete with Semicom logo embellished factory cardboard box. Sacramento Amusements (based out of Sacramento, CA) was selling one for $350.00 USD but I passed up on it at the time. I personally thought that it was too much to pay for one at the asking price. ^_~

If anybody wants this, shoot me a PM. I have a bare board I will sell for the $150 price within the US.

I played this in a Movietowne in Trinidad. It's been there since at least `05, so...

First player joystick was fucked though, and a couple of people wanted to play alongside, but they couldn't. It's not a bad shooter really. Only problem I had was with the music, using General Midi instruments [or something close] is never a good idea. I never bothered to continue on it, and the furthest I got was the level 3 [or was it level 4?] boss.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Its a Strikers 3 clone, with heavy Psikyo looking bullet patterns. I think its a pretty cool and challenging shmup. As mentioned above, the music sounds like simple midi instruments....but if you listen closely, you'll hear they are METALICA midi songs! (I'm sure unlicensed) :D

Having just popped in the PCB to give it another try (its been awhile) I herd Iron Madien's - 2 Mintues to Midnight on the first stage. So I guess its a collection of unlicensed heavy metal tunes. The music is actually quite low, and almost unnoticable if you were playing in a real arcade. The rest of the game is pretty manic with psikyo bullets that do the speed up / slow down thing, so the screen fills up quickly.

The music wasn't that low [especially the boss tune] at the arcade I played it in... maybe it was amplified there, but...
