Tron sequel, Tron Legacy, is due out in 2010...

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

If you have been keeping tabs on the latest scoop of the new Tron sequel to the ground breaking 1982 film of Tron with it's 10 minutes of CGI, Tron Legacy is slated for a release sometime in 2010. The catch this time around, is that it will be presented in 3-D courtesy of the Pace 3D camera system (that Vince Pace and James Cameron created for the upcoming Avatar film in December 2009).

The new light cycle scene shown in 3-D should be worth waiting for. ^_~

At the 2008 San Diego Comic Con, Disney previewed the cool new light cycle scene to a stunned audience with the teaser title of Tron 2.0. Should hopefully be a good sequel that the original film ushered in a new era of CGI in films. And yes, the Alan and Kevin Flynn characters will be back in Tron Legacy. ^_~

iirc this movie is being directed by another guy who previously made Halo 3 tv commercials for Microsoft (not Neil Blomkamp, a different guy / different Halo 3 commercials). If District 9 is any indication, making Halo commercials is good for your filmmaking career these days.

I was fully expecting them to shit on my cereal with this one, but the trailer is fucking awesome. Looks like Tron, sounds like Tron and Jeff 'The Man' Bridges is there, young and old. Very excited.

Original is cheeseball, but the dated visuals actually add to the charm. Imagine an 8-bit version of the trailer you've seen (with flicker and colour clash!) and you're spot on. Enjoyable nonsense from a time when gaming really was a niche hobby.

If Disney could restore ithe original Tron film to it's former glory (like with the complete restoration project with Blade Runner: Final Cut), I'd like to see it released on Blu-Ray format. ^_~

After doing a frame-by-frame analysis of the new Tron Legacy trailer in 1080p format on my PS3, the blue colored warrior is seen throwing a small bar that eventually becomes the new light cycle. To the see all the components that make up this new light cycle is amazing. Syd Mead had a hand in creating these new light cycles just like he did with the original Tron film and for the Tron 2.0 PC game release as well. ^_~

After watching the new trailer of TL a few times, I get the impression that the older Kevin Flynn character is held captive as a prisoner while a younger renegade Flynn warrior is going around killing other programs left and right.

The 20th anniversary Collector's Edition 2-DVD set of Tron released back in 2002 does have the obligatory 5.1 Dolby Digtal sound format which the first DVD release of the same name did not have.

I was 14 when the original movie came out. Gaming was not a niche, it was in its heyday back then, albeit Arcades and not home consoles. This movie primarily shaped my interest in computer programming, which (on a very long road) lead to my working fulltime in virtual worlds technology today. Whats funny is the name "TRON" was actually a command to turn on the basic debugger (TRacer ON) for TRS-80 Model 1 computer I started out on.

The best thing that could happen in this movie is if Jeff Bridges knocks down a few White Russians.

You know, I actually had this conversation with a friend of mine a month ago. He said that Tron hadn't fared too well since we were kids. I honestly couldn't remember seeing it since then, so I watched it with my wife again (that night, I think :D). I thought it was awesome. Way more enjoyable than when I was younger. If you can find a copy with the bonus features disc, you will be absolutely astounded at the pioneering work that went into this movie. The kicker is that the major work was not the CG, but trying to get humans into that world. Sadly they were denied a "best special effects" award for the film because the judges thought using CG was cheating. Watch the bonus features and see who was cheating with the thousands of man-hours of hand painting frame masks.

That being said, I'm curious to see what they do with the new one.

I recall watching a cool documentary on the Disney channel back in the mid-1980s on how the CGI was created for Tron. Three different computer effects companies were utilized. The light cycles were comprised of basic shapes and futher whitted down to achieve their final form. As it was easy to combine the shapes that went into making them, it was just as easy to reverse the process for the destruction of light cycles whenever they hit the light wall traces. ^_~

There was one guy who did nothing but animate Jeff Bridges' nose (when he was portrayed inside the computer world) and he came up to Mr. Bridges and said that he was sick and tired of seeing his nose close up (working all those countless hours).

The deleted "love scene" between Tron and Yori was cool but the musical soundtrack and voice effects for it, accidentally, was lost. I suppose someone with an expert ability to read lips could get a sense of what both characters were saying to each other to get a better understanding of that scene. Even Tron director Steven Lisberger even admits that he doesn't know what was said in that particular love scene anyways. I gotta admit Yori looked pretty damn sexy in that particular scene, If it had been incorporated into the Tron film, it would've pushed the sexual boundaries of PG rated movie fare indeed, especially for Disney movies at the time. Also the actress, Cindy Morgan who played Yori, she mentioned that whenever she would put on her computer world costume, she mentions that her breasts were very noticeable (with nipples and all). Talk about super skin tight costuming on the female form. ^_~

It's average, but enjoyable enough for a fan of the film, especially for the price it sells at these days.

Heh, that was on the 2-Disc Tron DVD :D I think he was actually painting more than just the nose, but apparently that the most annoying part of the repetitious face painting.

Again, 2-Disc Tron DVD. Buy it. Sound is on the bonus disc. After hearing about how long it takes for every second of video (up to 30 masks per frame), a scene like this, which lasts minutes, represents the loss of an immense amount of work (being as the scene was deleted). I can see why, being as it slows the pace of the story, but the work put into it makes me want to cry.

Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

I am sure that Disney is going to wait until they launch this movie or when they take it to BD. Then they will release both movies in a special edition box. Which will be the l337.

I've gotta agree with you, Specineff, on Disney waiting to properly release both Tron and Tron Legacy on Blu-Ray. It makes for smart business strategy to make more profit by selling both movies on the higher res format indeed. It'll be worth the wait. It's a given that most major movie studios are adding the finishing touches to their movies on DVD/Blu-Ray formats when their theaterical movies make their intial debut on the big screen. ^_~

When Smoking Aces debuted on the big screen, the intial release of it on DVD and HD-DVD format was just a mere two months later. But this is a rare exception for a major Hollywood produced film since most Blu-Ray and DVD releases are a good five to six months from the intial theaterical release anyways. It all depends on when the head honchos of the film studios give the final okay to officially distribute them on the retail market. ^_~
