Soul Calibur 09/09/09

Post by ST Dragon »

I still remember as if it was yesterday, when exactly 10 years ago Soul Calibur was released for the SEGA Dreamcast. The ads / commercial even emphasized on the iconic date: 09/09/09 ;)

My all time favorite was Soul Blade on the good ol’ PSX, especially its music and the Story Mode which were epic!

Sadly I didn’t enjoy Soul Calibur 2 as much on the PS-2 and never bothered to play SC III. Now I see that even SC IV was released!
So how well do they compare to the 1st two in the gameplay department?

The 4th plays kinda different from the first and second one (which i personally enjoyed a LOT- i had the gamecube version w/ link, after all)...
I didn't like it. But some other people do. Just borrow it to find out if it suits you.

I played Soul Edge on the PSX a lot and a few credits of SC 2 at the arcades. When I saw SC 4 for the first time at my friend's house my jaw dropped, I really liked it. I went as far as to get SC 3 to re-learn the game so I could beat my friend's ass next time I went there. I'm planning to buy it when I get a PS3.

Also, boobs.

I want to get SCIII but the fact that Namco didn't fix that stupid ass memory card corruption issue pisses me the hell off.

Either find a clean memory card to put your savegame or delete it before playing another game. SC 3 is worth having despite this bug.

Is this scene from SC III or IV? (PS-2, PS-3 or XBOX, XBOX360)?

You should learn to determine the games based off 1 glance at the sizes and how caucasoid their faces look.

At my local movie theater, they had a Soul Calibur II upright. Somebody had put in two credits but didn't bother to play it. I pressed start and selected Ivy as my playable character. Keep in mind that this was the first and only time I had played SC II on the Sony System246 based setup. I kept winning and beating all the contenders. Upon beating the final boss, I was able to input my intials for all to see. The System246 mobo does save scores and intials upon being powered down for the night. I was pleasantly surprised to see my score and intials upon eyeing the SC II upright the next time I was trolling around in the arcade game area a few weeks later. ^_~

cool, the System246 must be one of the few early "next-gen" arcade PCBs that saves the scores upon being powered down...

The boobs and "buldges" give it away more, the bigger they are the farther in the series you are.

What's sad is that the first design was the sexiest, by far, and every change makes her uglier.

I thought that SC2 had the best costume, and body for that matter. The body looked natural unlike the watermelon boobs in SC4. and there's no arguing with how jawsome the side boob was and still is.

The only buldge that didn't get bigger in time was that one in taki's pants in SC4... I was never sure what that really was

Monster boobies aside the SC4 design looks best to me. Then again, there's gotta be a place in the world for monster boobies. Right?

SC2 and SC3 had some interesting gameplay glitches that changed the game up. I don't know anything about SC2 though, and not much for SC3. I know that SC3's major glitch was VC, variable cancel. Basically it was a cancel, performed by holding guard and pressing down twice, that worked in varying ways. A VC that was available to every character was throwing while your back is facing the opponent. This would cancel YOUR throw animation and deal no damage, but the opponent is still stuck in the motion of being thrown. Some characters would have more of an advantage to using this of course. VC also rendered guard impacting somewhat useless, as you could use VC after being impacted and put yourself back at neutral, maybe even at advantage.

SC4's a fun game. I can't really compare its mechanics to the previous games 'cause SC4 really is the only one I've played in-depth, but everyone seems to say it's solid, maybe not quite up to SC2's level. And the idea of guest characters is just too funny! Star Wars for SC4 and Kratos from God of War in SC4: Broken Destiny on the PSP. And they aren't half-bad either, there's someone in my area who beats us down with Vader and Apprentice...

SCII started the cameo character (and platform-exclusive) trend with Heihachi, Link, and Spawn.

I was aware of Link & Heihachi in SCII (GC & PS-2), but not of Spawn?!
Wasn't it an another guest character for the Xbox?

I also heard that in Soul Calibur IV, all characters don't move at the same speed since Soul Calibur III, so the bigger bad-ass characters are slower than the smaller more agile ones. Rock, Mitsurugi and Cervantes are supposed to be some examples...

Cervantes was not that big after all... unless he pumped up since the last 2 games ;)

So is this true?

My question is, why Darth Vader's lightsaber can't cut through armor and weapons in SC IV?

And speaking of him...

Was Star Gladiator/Plasma Sword made by the same people who did Soul Edge/Calibur? It was already a cross between Soul Calibur and Star Wars long before Soul Calibur included actual Star Wars characters.
