I can see from the adverts that they're still pushing the multimedia aspect rather than the gaming aspect, but I suppose due to the amount the machine is stacked with they don't have much choice.
Personally I think the price tag (UK £250) isn't going to see a long term increase in sales performance, but at least they scrapped that god awful Spiderman font from the machine and marketing.
My old model feels well out of date now, and looks even more crap and cumbersome than before.
When it drops waaay down in price (about 4 years from now) I'll probably trade the old for new.
Wasn't there an article saying that the PS3 selling abysmally is nothing but a myth? Granted, it's not selling like the Wii, but it's not like Kaz Hirai and Co. are having to survive on ramen noodles and canned veggies.
The PS3 doesn't have a PS2 size installed base yet, but I read somewhere that they're doing comparable numbers at this point in the console's lifespan. It's not like they're sinking or anything, so I think it's quite an exaggeration to say "change [their] fortunes." Weren't they also selling more than the 360 at $400 until the last 360 price drop too? As for the Wii, Nintendo is just too far ahead right now .
There has been 2 PS3 TV ads at the moment, so I think it's early to say what Sony is focusing on. One is about the price drop and the other about the network features. A new one about the games oughta come out sometime. They've got a helluva lots of incredible games coming, and I don't see them not trying to remind people. Besides, what's the harm in trying to tell people that they're offering the console with the best features at a great price?

i'm really out of the loop these days. have they released gran turismo 5 or FFXIII yet?
and it wasn't a spiderman font, it's the David Beckham Soccer font
to the question, you have to take into account that they're still selling tons of psp's and even ps2's still in emergent markets like UAE, india, etc. xbox comes under microsoft's home entertainment & devices division (which also includes some shit like zune, etc). and they never made a profit throughout the 5 years of xbox1. they were about to make a profit on the 2nd year of the 360, but then they had to bail out half a billion in extending warranties due to RRoD problems. so installed bases, and units per quarter etc, don't really give the whole picture when it comes to profit/loss. even if nintendo sold the least amount of consoles, they would've been the company that made the most amount of money. as it stands, it's not even a console "war" anymore
RegalSin wrote:Videogames took my life away like the Natives during colonial times.
FFXIII next easter ish i would imagine. FFXIV is exclusive to PS3 and is already 50% done I think.
Sony will hold on until 2015 I think. Whichever way the console bragging rights go, I think the current state of affairs in the industry is alarmingly bad. Mass penetration of the industry is diluting gameplay for gimmicks, graphics rule and the idea of playing with a standard controller is becoming unfashionable.
Any companies wanting to make REAL games are probably asking banks for loan extensions right now. What a shame!!!
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.
Well if installed user bases were the basis of current console standings, the North American market ranks PS3 as third (and that's one big market) - but I can't comment on bottom line profits, I know Microsoft have hemorrhaged plenty of green over the years.
Personally I prefer the new PS3 design, but then I never really liked the original - it felt clunky and outdated to me from day of release. I think the Japanese always respond well to console redesigns and the new price point will probably have Sony making light of the brief 360 sales surge MS had recently in the region.
Getting rid of that font was the best move ever though.
Next, get rid of that archaic controller (Go on, I dare ya! )
What are you basing your standings on, then? You seem to think that Sony needs to be saved from doomage, and I get the idea that you're using sales as your measuring stick from your intro post. You seem quite curious about whether or not the new price will have long lasting effect and change Sony's fortunes, right? Personally, I think installed base is an important part of a console's success because it lures in developers and it never hurts a company to have lots of fans. Other criteria are more based on opinion, like games. All three current consoles have great games but the perception changes depending on interest.

Don't look down on it to much. I am quite thankful to have that PS2 backwards compatible function plus the the great scaling the PS3 offers on interlaced material. the newer model strips out alot of bells and whistles from the model I own. I do like the small size but I would not trade if offered.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?
I think this will sell about as well as the original - not really better or worse. I'm sure it'll get a big spike of sales (especially in Japan, where the stock has been very low of PS3s in general) at first, but long term, no real shifts imho.

the new slim one comes with the Bravia sync feature, and I happen to have a Bravia... It would be definitely cool to be able to use it with the tv remote. However, the fat one can install other OS, and who knows, maybe something good might come out of that in the hackin scene...

Power consumption is about 45% of the 60gb machine
But even though the 60gb machine is light on features, I still want one due to the power and fan noise concerns with the 60gb machine. Watching a movie in the summer on my 60gb is like watching a movie in front on your woman blow drying her hair.
*edit* If you live near me, you can buy my 2 60gb machines. One USA/One UK.

Hmm, agreed regarding the ability to install other OS's on the old model, although I've been waiting for something truly incredible to come out of that for a while (I wanted someone to really wreck it like they did the PSP).
Wasn't there an article saying that the PS3 selling abysmally is nothing but a myth?
Probably.
I always get done over on here for PS3 bashing so I'm trying to pick my words carefully (console allegiance is a sensitive school playground subject!). Please take the thread at face value - I was just interested to know what, if anything, you guys thought the re-model would do for the PS3's sales.
Personally I thought it always needed a re-model, perhaps the Sony guys thought so too.

I have a slim, and I prefer it to the 40GB I owned a few years ago. The textured plastic was a godsend for those of us who are particular about the condition of our stuff. I felt like I was scratching the hell out of the system just by looking at it. The console supports true digital audio over just PCM in the older models. The new 45nm process on the CPU and GPU should keep temps down and the yellow light of death away (not that it is a huge problem to start with). And obviously, the larger HD and smaller form factor for $299 is a solid deal.
This isn't a "My PS3 iz bettar than ur PS3" post, but if I want to use Linux, i'll get on my computer. The "other OS" is a feature that I grew bored with after just a few days.
It is true that while PS3 is not selling "abysmally", it sure isn't doing nearly as well as it should, given that the price is now down to a reasonable level and there is a good game library. This remodeling might actually jump-start the sales again, because a new model is always a good excuse to re-think purchasing a console - "good thing I waited and didn't buy the expensive fatty one!".
However, it's not going to be so clear what effect the slimification will have on the sales, because many important games are already near release. Sony has been making noise on the game front recently, at the GamesCom in Cologne their presence was very noticeable: People got to actually play demo versions of Heavy Rain, God of War III, MAG (didn't care for this myself), Uncharted 2, Final Fantasy XIV and Dead Nation. If they keep up the same momentum in Tokyo Game Show, Wii owners and other sleepers may very well start buying PS3.
Before Pope John Paul died he decreed that Aliens were also GOD's creatures and we should treat them with respect.
The new price point is sure making me think a lot harder about buying one. I'm sure that I will when there are a few more games on the system that I need to play, but that will be another year at least. Still, pricing the PS3 so high was one of Sony's biggest mistakes, I believe (or, making a console that needed to be priced that high), and that mistake is now remedied.
"I think Ikaruga is pretty tough. It is like a modern version of Galaga that some Japanese company made."
They will not beat Nintendo in the user base department this generation, but between Sony and Microsoft the battle might intensify and change the odds to Sony's side if they do their marketing well.
Microsoft still suffers from the bad reliability of the X360 & this could potentially steer new informed customers to Sony. And though the 360 has a better/bigger game library atm for sure, a potential AAA+ exclusive games like GT 5 or indeed GOW could change things very fast if it gets momentum.
I must admit that if I were to buy 1 of both at this point in time it would be the PS3 slim (the "old" PS3 is just tooooo ugly)
As usual, Polyphony Digital sure take their slow-ass time to hone and perfect their latest Gran Turismo game before retail release. After hearing that it will finally get a proper May 2010 release, I put down a prepaid deposit on it. So when the PS3 GT5 finally arrives, it will be in my PS3 on day one of release. ^_~
It'd have to help. I would have had a PS3 by now, but was totally put off by the price. And I think that's what kept some sweet games off of it(or at least exclusive to it). So now it's like, most games I do want, I already have on the 360(ticking time bomb though).
GOW3 and some of these other games might kick interest back in it. I'll certainly be thinking it over. No backward compatibility with PS2 is still retarded.
I actually think I'm going to wait for the third revision, priced at £149.99, slim as laptop, including PS1 & PS2 backward compatibility and firmware that's waiting to be wrecked by hackers.
Skykid gameplay are selling it at £229.99. I think sales will increase.
The only reason I wanted backwards compatibility was for progressive scan Gradius V, but then I realized the HD Xploder disc can do it better with my PS2!

So is it not a good idea to upgrade to firmware 3.00 and leave my PS3 at f/w version 2.80? Of course, I still get that annoying pop-up message that a f/w update is available and should d/l now. And what's new with this f/w 3.00 anyways?
With Linux install getting the boot from the slimline PS3, you might have been concerned that Sony would pull a fast one and make the functionality disappear from older systems via a firmware update.
Rest assured, this will not happen. Sony's Satoshi Hashimoto, in an interview with Impress Watch, said that Sony will not be removing the feature, which he refers to as "Other OS functionality." He also assured readers that there currently isn't a problem with the feature leaving a security hole with the system.
Hashimoto and a few other Sony cohorts shared a number of additional tidbits on the version 3.0 firmware Sony will be launching on September 1 to coincide with the official release date for the PS3 slim. Here are the major points.
Version 3.0 of the the firmware will add the ability to upconvert audio from hard disc and USB sources to 88.2KHz or 176.4KHz. This is something that was added with version 1.8 exclusively for CDs.
The right analogue stick functionality during video playback looks like it will be pretty powerful. When you push the stick in any direction, the video will pause You can then rotate the stick for speeds ranging between slow motion and four times. Rotate clockwise, and you'll advance the video. Counterclockwise will backtrack. The speed can be adjusted at a precision of 0.01 times. Let go of the stick, and the playback will continue at normal speed.
The web browser's print screen functionality can output to a printer connected via USB and over LAN. Only certain printers are compatible though.
This is something you might have not noticed before (I certainly never gave much thought to it). Currently, when you start up your PS3, the XMB interface begins by pointing at the games section. Starting with firmware 3.0, the interface will default to pointing at the newly added What's New section of the network column. This is true even if you have a disc in the system. You can go into the settings menu to switch back to the original behavior if you like.
The analogue clock display in the upper right side corner of the screen has been switched to a busy indicator. When the system is working, you'll see the clock spinning.
The font size and icon size for the main interface have become a bit bigger. This was implemented in order to better show what area is in focus.
From version 3.0, all versions of the PS3 -- old and new -- will have a change to their startup sequences. When booting up the system for the firts time, PlayStation family logo, PS3 logo, and PlayStation 3 logo will all display simultaneously. When you start up a game, the PS3 logo will no longer be shown, giving a slight boost in speed to startup time. Note that this does not apply to original PlayStation games, as they run on an emulator.
Version 3.0 adds support for more dynamic themes using videos and other elements. The system's base "wave" theme has also been changed to a display of fine particles. Backgrounds for such themes are created by the same SDK that's used to make games. There's a slight bit of interaction with the particle effects. If you're scrolling down, the particles will flow down. If you're scrolling left, the particles will flow left.
I'm certain some people have figured this out already, but the slimline PS3 does not ship with System 3.0. This was due to circumstances during manufacturing. Slim buyers will have to update like the rest of us.
We'll get to see all these new features at work on September 1!
My opinion. Its got a massive icon start up with "whats New" for the store so you can see at a glance without going through the whole store.. it has the store in the game column as well. I get the impression we are not buying enough stuff hehe.
The XMB original theme has sprinkly stars on it.
You can download themes that are heavily animated (store themes only, you cannot get custom themes that animate)
Thats about it.
Oh, UK people get a TV bar in the XMB for BBC's iplayer.

I have been buying games, consoles, the lot from these guys for the last ten years. When Sony release a 250GB PS3 i will buy one.
I don't think the ability to install Linux was worth anything to them sales-wise. Anyone who cared about that - and I'll bet that number is very, very few - either has one by now or wasn't planning on buying.

Given I cannot figure out Linux at all, what are the benefits and purposes of installing it on the PS3? Will that pretty much turn it into a Linux computer?
