I'm merely trying to catalogue how many levels various old-school titles have. If there's some great big magical database somewhere with game information, please point me to it.

IIRC, Zanac has 14 or some shit like that. Recca has 4. You can check the shmups.com review for a lot of these to find out.
Blow up self to involve enemies.

Recca has 4 stages on normal mode, 7 on hard, and 1 for score/time attack. Hard mode Area 3 is the same as normal mode Stage 3, for some reason.
