PC Shmups Similar to Tyrian

Post by CarnageX »

So I've been revisiting Tyrian 2000 recently and Shmups in general and I was wondering if anyone could recommend me some similar games for PC (year doesn't matter).

The features I like the most in Tyrian 2000:
-Shop
-Power upgrades for weapons
-Many original levels (5 episodes)

I've already tried:
-Raptor Call of the Shadows
-Jets 'n Guns

Ideas and suggestions appreciated!

Nothing comes close to Tyrian on the PC for that style of shmup, unfortunately. But that's okay, because Tyrian is so great :)

you've pretty much exhausted that type of game on the PC but if you like these "Euroshmups" then you may be interested in :

Thanks for the suggestion Gespenst. Although no Tyrian, StarGunner is pretty decent. Does anyone else have a constructive suggestion? A vert scroller perhaps?

Jets 'n' Guns Gold adds a bunch of new levels and rebalances weapons so that you can't chew through the whole game easily with a few tornado railguns. also adds such things as different ships and new ship upgrades (health regen...)

It also features what is quite possibly the greatest shmup soundtrack in existence.

all in all the biggest problem i have with jng is how often you get instantly killed by colliding with enemies coming in from the top and bottom of the screen (sometimes even the left side of the screen) without warning. also the big hitbox and crap you can't dodge (as in your hitbox will actually not fit into the gaps between bullets) means that going for a lighter ship with less armour upgrades is unreasonably difficult... meh

raptor: call of the shadows was the first pc shmup I ever played and that has a shop and gets insane later on in the game.

If you are curious there is an old PC port (DOS, EGA or VGA, iirc) of Xenon 2 Megablast that fits your criteria; although you are far better off with the Amiga version (or if you can't get that, second would be the Atari ST version).

theres also a follow on to xenon2 called xenon 2000 that'll prolly have a shop aswell.

Also i believe these games have shops but i dont know about anything else about them. as i havnt played them myself.
GR-HI
Hitoga Happa (dont know if the shop appears every lvl or just once in the game,)
Trouble Witches
Infilator
Legend Blue (plays like jets and guns but is heavy in japanese text)
Pladzma (no pwr ups, shop only)

I spent very little time with the game (1cc'd normal the very first time I played and then quit, lol), but I'm 100% sure the Hitogata Happa shop appears every level because it's so broken and you can just stockpile this one superbroken form in particular and just constantly suicide and bomb your way past all the bosses. I laugh heartily at people who think Hitogata Happa is a good game (yes, these people exist). IIRC they seem to like Cave too, which is odd because this game is nothing like Cave.

Hees a few more with shops in judging from the graphical style most of them are euro shmups

Star blaze
Star gunner (like jets and guns)
Warblade
Absolute blue (unsure about there been a shop but it does have 60 levels, thank god its not a bullet hell game hehe)
Alien stars (unsure about a shop in this aswell but its a vert euro shmup)
Arydox (dunno about a shop but desciption says its like tyrian)
Astro avenger 2
Astro menace
Crusaders of Space 2

them should keep you happy for a while :)

PS Ive only just put my avator up and i was thinking it would be pritty rare to have tiki in a shmup forum and lo and behold the next post is another tiki heheh
im glad i didnt go with my 1st choice of tiki which was exactly like enhansa's tiki

Tiki overload!

Judging from the number of threads on the game, the creator of Tyrian must have done something right - even though that something right is many peoples definition of wrong.
It is powerup of laser.

something right = release an arcade/console style game as DOS shareware

It's the exact same thing with Raptor. Hell, Ambrosia built their empire by filling a niche on the Mac with crappy arcade ripoffs. Epic and Apogee were very shameless about this sort of thing (anyone remember Wacky Wheels?), although One Must Fall: 2097 and Jazz Jackrabbit were decent games at least, even if nowhere near SF2 or Sonic.

not quite PC but Forgotten Worlds/Lost Worlds is neat

some of those older Capcom games might indirectly cater to what you ask, even when you think they don't
