I'm planning to buy one of the new PS3 Slims soon, and I'm wondering about how the console currently handles the scaling of Blu-ray. I've seen some talk from the first year or two of the PS3's release stating that if a TV's native resolution is 720p then the PS3 will only output Blu-ray at a measly 480p. Is that still the case or has a firmware update changed that?
My TV is a Panasonic LXD70. The native resolution is 720p, but it can accept a signal up to 1080p. If that screwy business about PS3s only outputting Blu-ray at 480 or 1080 is still the case, which would it be likely to pipe out to my TV? I'll be connecting it via HDMI, so I don't know what information that gives the console about the TV for automating output resolution.
Also, if the PS3 does currently scale Blu-ray to 720p, does it does a good job or it, or would I be better outputting at 1080p and letting my TV handle the scaling?

Re: Blu-ray scaling on PS3
When you get your PS3, just go to the display settings and video settings and check/tick all the boxes for
480i
480p
720p
1080i
1080p
The PS3 will output at 1080p and your TV will downscale it to the maximum resolution it can handle. The results will be great because your maximising the resolution of your TV. If you want better than that, upgrade your TV.
My first HDTV was 768p and I thought the image was fantastic. I have now upgraded to 1080p, but the image only slightly improved as I only have a 40" HDTV.
Hope this helps.

This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.
