any arcade in Sanfrancisco?

Post by manatworks »

hello!,this is my first thread here. I just moving to SF for study, after a few weeks of city-exploration, the only arcade i found is the one near Fisherman's wharf (ok,it has a lot of fascinating old electromechanical coin-op machine more than arcade cabs but i think is damn awesome).
I won't set my expectation so high to see arcade with recent shmups ,but it'd be nice to know the place with more recent games ,any recommendation?

p.s. sorry for my rusty English

San Francisco State University's arcade often has good shmups. They've had RF2, Dodonpachi, Esp Galuda 2, RF Jet, and Strikers 1999 during the time I was there (not all at the same time).

Starbase-One is also good, up in San Rafael (30 min north). They have a few pins, Roadblasters, and usually have some shmup or two. It's often set on easy, but the arcade owner is usually there, he's really talkative, and he seems like he might be responsive to requests.

The above two arcades also have a good selection of fighting games.

This is a long drive away, but Scandia's up in Ronert Park (40 min north) usually have a good selection. Last time I was there, they actually had an Ikaruga cab. They have a good selection of older games anyway.

Finally, Nickel City down off Camden (40 min south or so) sometimes has shmups like Dimahoo or Mars Matrix, but their maintenance is usually pretty bad.

SJSU used to have that DoDonPachi machine.

How lame of them to set it to Very hard.

There are no arcades in SF, other than that sad excuse for one at the back of Pier 39 and the one in SFSU's Student Center.

Stupid zoning restrictions and other idiotic laws make it virtually impossible to open one, let alone make a profit.

SFSU usually has a shmup, not sure what they have now (I graduated last spring so I haven't been around campus much).

Keep an eye out on the Shmupmeets board for stuff in your area, or try searches like searching for 'Francisco' in the Shmupmeets board (tick 'topics' instead of 'posts' and highlight 'shmupmeets') and you get a list of five threads..

Nothing like shmupping with people out in the wild. I've made some good friends thanks to the Shmupmeets board.
