Kusoge you love.

I'll start.

Earth Defense Force 2017. It's a great game that sells on a really basic gimmick; the gimmick of destroying gigantic spiders/ants/things with various weapons. There's something like 53 levels and 5 different difficulty levels (easy, normal, hard, hardest, inferno) to go through. It's eaten about 130 hours of my time but I've done pretty much everything there is to do in this game.

Unfortunately co-op suffers as there's no online, but D3 Publisher said they're making another EDF and it'll have online co-op. If so, I'm buying it day #1. Problem with this game is that it has terribly clunky controls, horrendously massive lag (especially on co-op), and in general all you're doing is rolling around collecting items. Oh and there's grinding. In a shooting game.

Image

What could possibly go wrong? Well uh, nothing, because I loved this game as a kid and I've beaten it a whole bunch of times. The music's catchy, the worlds are colorful, the enemies are neat and as are the bosses. Thing is, this game had some weird inertia which made you crash into enemies if you weren't careful enough, and I guess that put a lot of people off.

I heard the SNES version was inferior, but I've never bothered to play it. I think most of the hate comes from Bubsy 3D, which I played on release, and didn't really care for. 3D was still a foreign concept to me at the time, but I knew the games weren't the same. I honestly don't understand why people dislike the first title though.

So what other bad games do you guys enjoy, regardless of their mediocrity?

Devastation Zone Troopers.

There's very little point to this game. You just walk around mazes killing things.
Most enemies are the same, just with different hitpoints and firing rate, graphics average at best, sounds & music are annoying, but for some reason I enjoy it.
Maybe it's because everything in this game is destructible (well, not everything, it's 2D so you can't destroy the ground).

Ultraman Towards the Future on the SNES.

It's clumsy, but I've found ways to pwn each and every monster. Ultra-throws, Ultra-chops, Ultra-Shields and battling against the monsters and odd controls (Ultra Backflip lets you avoid projectiles, woot.), can be actually fun.
Don't hold grudges. GET EVEN.

Is EDF 2017 really classifiable as a kusoge? Really? It's not gears of warts so it doesn't have that trademark grunge shine, but the screenshots always looked epic to me.

Hmm, I can't think of anything that I "love" which is a kusoge, at least not out of Twiddle's FPS thread. I loved playing Secret of Evermore, not sure it's classifiable as a kusoge on account of the production qualities though (after all, it was the storyline + grafix + AMBIANCE which made me love the game).

Maybe when I play some Gabriel Knight game I'll have a contender.

There is always Ninja Cop Saizou but I never really enjoyed playing it - just the cutscene dialogues. Why are you kidnapping kids?! BUSINESS REASONS

Maou-renjishi (Mystical Fighter)/ Megadrive
When Dreamworks released Taito's Maou-renjishi as "Mystical Fighter", EGM shat on it with some low review scores. OK, I'll admit it's not quite Streets of Rage 2 or Golden Axe and your moves are limited- but it isn't bad enough to keep me away. This Kabuki themed 2 player beat-em-up actually plays alright and has awesome BGM. The developer on this one is KID (who did the FM Towns Raiden).

Street Fighter EX3 / PS2
I don't really play this one, but I do listen to the soundtrack on its own. Four great composers- Takayuki Aihara, Yasuhisa Watanabe, Shinji Hosoe, and Ayako Saso- give this one some memorable tunes. I was hoping they would've done the SF4 soundtrack.

Golden Axe III (Megadrive)
What in the Hell happened to the awesome magic SFX from the first two Genesis GA titles? The dragons are kind of worthless in comparison to previous GA games. Anyway, playing as the panther is awesome. There's even a bit of Engrish in there if you fail: "AND YOU DEAD". I think this one drew flak for not playing as good as Revenge of Death Adder. Like RoDA, there are some branching paths. It's alright. At least Sega added some special moves to this one, and reworked the AI a bit.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

It gets more fun on each subsequent playthrough as you continue to power up your weapons and spells. It really isn't a good game, but for some reason I've played through it four times and know that I'll keep going back to it like a scab I can't stop scratching.

Rastan Saga 2/Nastar. Ugly graphics and poor control, but it has an odd charm to it.

I also liked Bubsy when I rented it, though I played the SNES one.

Kid Chameleon's not a kuso-ge, Kid Chameleon's awesome.

My kuso-ge is

DEADLY TOWERS AAAAAHHHHH!!!!

I can't say I exactly love it though, but I kind of like it. I have a soft spot in my heart for it, because it's so damn hard, and broken, yet it can be beaten if you know how. Back in the day I used to think this game was impossible. Recently I managed to finish it in 1:05. The key to a fast run is to not buy the boots or any armor, and get the ultimate armors in the towers without getting crushed. A lot of times I screw up and die. Then I hit the power button and go do something else. Definitely a kuso-ge.

Oh you did not go there D: Maou Renjishi is one of my favorite beat-em-ups actually. I actually thought of it for this thread, so that makes two of us...but it's not bad.

By the way, you guys be the judge of this one: I put Pool of Radiance in the "overrated" category of a thread at DP, but regretted it later. It's a good game, although it has some definitely poopy elements (some bugs and needing to drop all your gold to outfit your characters properly, mainly).

Does Brandish series qualify as kusoge?
If so, I love that series - I even play it almost yearly since... I dunno, lost count. Brandish 2 & 3 are some of my favorite games ever and I thank Nihon falcom for developing them. I just loved the unorthodox control scheme for exploring the dungeons and I think it's exactly the controls why someone would classify it as a kusoge. It needs getting used to, but once you get the hang of it, you wish more dungeon crawlers would use a similar approach.

Also, the top notch Soundtrack helps for a very relaxing dungeon exploring session. ^__^

Long live

I don't think there's much of an "official" threshold, as what constitutes a "crap game" will vary from person to person - for the purposes of this thread I guess it's just a matter of "a game you don't personally consider very well-made but still enjoy anyway."

Nah, I don't think so. ;) Way too high production values. I do enjoy the series, and Brandish 4 ditches the rotating viewpoint for an isometric view. Great series all around...but I definitely prefer the PC-98 versions over the console ports.

Agreed. Well, actually I was talking about the PC-98 versions; the ports are utter bullshit IMO and Brandish is first and foremost a PC game. I have to admit though that falcom's own PSP remake works very well, still prefer Br Renewal over it tho.

As for Br4/VT... well let's just say it's ok but I found the atmosphere in the other 3 to be way more satisfying.

I tried to find a video without someone talking over it so you could just hear the theme song, but this is even funnier, a guy who actually likes it, says other people don't know how to play it, and turns it to easy to "take advantage of it"

Oddly enough, I remember Ballz getting fairly good reviews when it came out. Then again, many crap games garnered positive reviews upon release. ...and it was probably in Gamepro anyway...

I don't think Chaotix counts [it might, the damn thing was rushed], but the level design sucks [every level is the same, almost], yet I still love it.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.
