Looking for something easy but fun to 1CC in Mame
Looking for something easy but fun to 1CC in Mame
hey folks, Ataru here, haven't posted in a while because of various time draining life happenings.
I've been messing around with Mame again for the first time in a long time, and I've been playing a lot of old classics and some early manics... and it's fun as hell but a lot of these games are ultrabrutacular and hard to play in yoko on a 1024x768 laptop screen.
So I'm looking for something fun to play but not insanely difficult to 1CC. A moderately deep scoring system would be keen too.
Perhaps Horizontal games are the way to go, what should I look for other than Gradius/R-Type/ProGear/Pulstar/Parodius?
Also, OT to this post but what the hell, anyone else stoked about the coming of the PS3 purely because it means we're close to a much cheaper PS2? Once they are cheaper I'm gonna get a JP region PS2 for all those Cave games... drool.

Well arcade shmups aren't very easy usually. They're Coin Munchers! That's what they'e for!
But I would for Carrier Air Wing. Very balanced difficulty & you wont have trouble 1 CC ing it if you save your money at list up to level 3 without buying anything.
Also DoDonPachi isn't that hard imo.
Or go for Thunder Force AC, & Hyper Duel - by thechno soft.

Try R-Type Leo or Blazing Star. Neither are particularly easy, but they don't have the kind of face-rippingly insane difficulty of their siblings (R-Type and Pulstar). Great games, and usually overlooked. Blazing Star has a pretty cool chaining mechanic but Leo is pretty much straight-ahead blowing shit up.
Blow up self to involve enemies.

Blazing Star makes me want to rip my face off. Good game, thoughblack mariah wrote:Try R-Type Leo or Blazing Star. I recently got Batsugun Special Edition and got a good deal of the way through stage 5 on my first try, so I think that would be a good one to try out. It's a really fun game, too, despite the fact that there's no sound and the first level graphics are glitchy on MAME.

Since I've never 1cc'ed anything (nee-hah! I suck!), I should probably just shut up, but what the hell...
I've made rather good progress in DDP, I second that notion. I used to gimp through stages 3 and 4, but I now I've shoved that gimping to stage 5...Also DoDonPachi isn't that hard imo.
Again, agreed. The rank system can get a little outlandish at times though...("AGH! WHERE'D THE HELL THAT ALL COME FROM?!?!")For a horizontal shmup... the 1st Gradius is not all that hard, and is still enjoyable IMO. Though I have more memories of playing the MSX then the Arcade version

now tighter than your sister
- Leathal Thunder, pretty good and easy to 1cc. Which is surprising considering it's an Irem title.
- Carrier Airwing, even too easy in default setting. I almost managed to 1cc it after setting the dip switch in "very hard"
- Salamander II, got to level 4 on my first try. Seems possible to me.
- 19xx, apart from the last boss. As far as I can remember, the bastard has manic-ish patterns. But the rest of the game is OK.

yeah, it definitely does.
my skill level is such that I can one credit clear Ikaruga on Easy Mode, with the faster extends and 5 starting lives. Done it a couple times... always managing to die a few times in stupid ways preventing an full default Easy mode clear.
