Ridley Scott to direct prequel to Alien!!!!!!....

Sweet!! I remember that in the Aliens DVD with commentary, Scott said that he always wanted to do a movie going back to the Alien's home planet-I hope this is it, but even if it's not, I have very high hopes with Scott directing!

Nice! I'm guessing that means it will be more horror-ish than the rest of the series, which definitely leaned more in the action direction. Has Scott directed anything recently, out of curiosity? I don't seem to recall his name being mentioned in a long time.

Scott did American Gangster in 2007 (which was awesome) and he also did Body Of Lies last year.

I can't believe we might actually get a good Alien/Hollywood film again.
After the butchering of every decent 80's movie franchise, there is at last a glimmer of hope!

I'm not too sure what the point of an Alien prequel is, beyond pumping more money out of the franchise.

I wasn't too sure what the point of Alien vs Predator 1 & 2 were, but the prospects of this are already infinitely better.

The film should be worth watching, as long as the script is decent. No amount of good directing can compensate for a poorly written script.
Re: Ridley Scott to direct prequel to Alien!!!!!!....
IIRC both Scott and James Cameron tried to convince FOX that the AVP movie was a bad move, and suggested they'd have a go at a prequel instead. But FOX was OF COURSE in their right minds, as usual.
Just imagine if Fincher could have gotten his way with Alien3, instead of FOX suits stepping all over it.

The script is being done by some new Sci-Fi horrow writer according to AICN: http://www.aintitcool.com/node/41887Icarus wrote:The film should be worth watching, as long as the script is decent. No amount of good directing can compensate for a poorly written script.

Spoiler: everybody dies
I don't know the opening to Alien that well, but basically there aren't even any humans before the Nostromo gets there, right? So maybe we'll see the elephant man aliens running around wildly, stubbing their toes, eating peanuts, etc.
(I know there must have been some previous contact what with the captain knowing about it but I dunno, two hours of futuristic intrigue...I'll see what reviews it gets.)

Re: Ridley Scott to direct prequel to Alien!!!!!!....
To finally get to see what the Aliens homeworld looks like, I'm sure H.R. Giger will contribute his famous artistic vision to portray it properly. If you watch Alien Ressurrection, the sci-fi fans already know that there can't be anymore than just one Queen with her brood of egg sacs and legion of Soldier Aliens to protect her. It was director James Cameron's one detailed piece of artwork that was the basis for the Queen Alien in the second Aliens film that sets the stage. Of course, it was all real-time puppetry and hyduralic special effects at their best to pull it off successfully. ^_~
I have one of those cool Todd McFarlane deluxe Queen Alien artiiculared action figures (when they first went on sale in the USA) and she's definitely an ugly bitch alrighty. Beautifully sculpted in the third dimension indeed. Actually, I have a few of the McFarlene Alien creatures from the various Alien films and they are all unique in their own respected and highly evovled way, especially the first Alien creature with it's cool spring-loaded silver tongue lashing action feature. ^_~
I recall seeing the cool 1979 Kenner produced Alien action figure toy for sale when it was available at retail for cheap...I never did get one though (it fetches quite a bit on the secondary collector's market these days, especially if in mint and brand new condition nowdays). I've seen it fetch $600+ USD on eBay sometime back.
It's always good news to hear that another Alien film is official, even if it is a prequel to the very first Alien film in the hands of a talented film director.

A prequel with Ridley Scott directing again would be awesome - I hope.

I didn't mind resurrection - if only they'd cut some of the stupid humour from it, it would have been much more credible.DEL wrote:A prequel with Ridley Scott directing again would be awesome - I hope.

I always thought Alien Resurrection is to Alien 1-3 what Spaceballs is to Star Wars IV-VI
When I first heard the news of a new Alien film by Ridley Scott I thought hopefully it won't build up on the Alien 4 story, so the news that it will be a prequel is great imo.

The series already lost legendary status with 3 & Ressurection & the ridiculous AvP spin offs.Skykid wrote:Meaning which, film or director?Super Laydock wrote:Another legend will likely bite the dust!
The name Ridley Scott is for always connected with both Alien & Blade Runner, giving a somewhat legendary status. If he screws up with this franchise or accepts to work with a mediocre script he's endangering his status imho.
But there's always hope and if pulls of another masterpiece it will strengthen his cult status.
I hope for the latter, though don't think people should get there hopes up to high.
The higher one gets the further he could fall.

Re: Ridley Scott to direct prequel to Alien!!!!!!....
Black Hawk Down was a pile of shit.
I forgot that there was the possibility of human contact prior to Alien. When this thread first started, I could only see a prequel being like the opening twenty minutes of 2001, with apes replaced by aliens, which obviously wouldn't make for the most entertaining movie-going experience ever.
I'd say it's good money that this movie convenienty forgets that the aliens look like they do because they hatch from inside humans, and so the pre-human-contact bunch should look significantly different, and instead has them all exactly as we've come to expect.Ed Oscuro wrote:I don't know the opening to Alien that well, but basically there aren't even any humans before the Nostromo gets there, right? Indeed. At the risk of sounding unpopular and a little stupid, I've always ranked the 3rd as the best film. The script was weak as shit, but Fincher is a better director than anyone else that's touched the series. Definitely better than Cameron, but Aliens was a great action flick.Just imagine if Fincher could have gotten his way with Alien3, instead of FOX suits stepping all over it.

Alien 3 with Fincher and the original Gibson script would've been pretty interesting.
Indeed there seems to be some precedent for it in Alien (like I mention just before) but it still smells to high heaven to me. Even if there's no coherent argument against it, well, just look at Star Trek: Enterprise.E. Randy Dupre wrote:I forgot that there was the possibility of human contact prior to Alien.

Where can I read the original Alien 3 script?
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

The only contact they seemed to have had was with another alien race-remember the alien pilot of that ship in the first movie? Perhaps they'll tell his/her story. I'm sure part of it will be told, because the ship is how the aliens got to LV-426 in the first place.E. Randy Dupre wrote:Black Hawk Down was a pile of shit.

About the original Alien 3 script-wasn't the first plan with that movie to bring the Aliens to earth? Because there is an Alien 3 trailer you can watch on the internet that ends with "...on earth, everyone can here you scream". If that's the script, I'd like to read it, too. Heck, they could novelize it, just not call it Alien 3.

Re: Ridley Scott to direct prequel to Alien!!!!!!....
There was one Alien 3 script where it was suppose to continue the further adventures of Lt. Ripley, Newt, Hicks and company after the ending sequence in Aliens. Sadly, that particular script was chalked off as not feasible. The actress Carrie Hein did Aliens as her only sole film period. She's now an elementary school teacher...she still has that famous high-pitched scream as well that was captured for posterity in the Aliens film. I think she would've made a fine actress if she decided to pursue acting. ^_~

A cobbled-together family unit goes on more craaazy alien-fighting adventures! A lot of fans of the second movie would probably like to see something like that, but I think it would turn out pretty lame no matter how it was executed. Alien3 was downbeat, but I don't hate the direction it took.PC Engine Fan X! wrote:There was one Alien 3 script where it was suppose to continue the further adventures of Lt. There's a coughing-in-the-first-act line in Alien where Dallas says that the ship's regular science officer was replaced by Ash at the last minute, suggesting somebody at the Company was anticipating some weird shit. The line wasn't in the DVD director's cut, though.dave4shmups wrote:The only contact they seemed to have had was with another alien race-remember the alien pilot of that ship in the first movie? That would be stupid, yeah, but even AVP-R remembered to make the Predator-spawned alien different, so I wouldn't worry yet.E.
