H-IPS monitors and shmupping?

Post by psyvariar »

Most HD LCD monitors use "TN" techology, vs. "IPS" technology, due to the relative cheap method of panel production with "TN" technology (as explained below)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquid_cry ... chnologies

I've been looking at "Pivoting" monitors, and H-IPS technology ones have begun to catch my eye. From the specs, they are generally slower, but have made some great strides in matching up to the speed of TN panels. The viewability is generally far better (anyone who has "TATED" their LCD monitor knows that the viewing angle is generally poorer, like the colors on both sides are just too different to look any good...)

Anyone have any experience with TATE shmupping with H-IPS monitors? Specifically, the HP lp2475w?

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=hp ... aqi=g-p3g7

It's the only monitor in its class that goes for about $500-$600 USD, seems to have many features that an XRGB unit might have (S-Video, Component, SPDIF Output, etc.), and pivots and rotates.

Sure, it's double the cost of most monitors... and it's likely far more ideal for photo manipulation than shmupping... but the idea of having a monitor that looks as good vertically oriented as horizontally oriented (and believe me, I was sad to see my 20" CRT Planar Monitor go kaputski!) is rather appealing! 8)

Specifically, they mention it has 33ms of input lag. That's about 2F. That's not really terrible, but it's something to definitely be aware of, especially coming from a CRT.

The other thing as I'm sure you are aware of, is that LCDs generally look like ass running in anything other than their native resolution (this includes input from S-Video/Component/etc usually), so if you're going to be running and old systems on it, make sure you have a good upscan converter. Specifically, one that doesn't add any extra lag.

By a long shot the best current IPS gaming LCD is the 26" display LG W2600HP which runs at about 500 EUR here in Europe. Could be in your desired price range in the USA. (Note that there're other W2600xx models which are TN and not IPS-based).

Glossy? Eww. I could probably use that as a replacement for my current 21" 4:3 LCD though...the gloss shouldn't cancel out the reasons for going IPS because of this area's light environment. Would be hell to use anywhere with lots of white stuff or, even worse, sunlight.

Also, beware: W2600HPF monitors sold in Best Buy here in the states are a TN panel (cheaper, look for the viewing angle to tell).

I'm also in the market for a high-fidelity panel now (plus I think the backlight in the ol' SyncMaster 204b is going dim - i.e. ever so slight brownish look on the screen). I'll probably try to find one with an LED backlight though (which might have me waiting for another year).
