Re: Rastan unpleasantness
Here's a picture of my board (that I unfortunately sold just a few days ago):

I'm sorry, but it doesn't do you much good at that angle I guess? Have you checked the MAWS resources for Rastan?

Is that pattern of white squares identical each time you boot it?

Re: Rastan unpleasantness
Do you see a Tatio chip labeled "PC080SN" (or something close to that; not "090" as that would be the sprite controller)? The relevant RAM chip(s) would probably be near this chip. I'm not sure what kind of RAM it would be, but most RAMs have a part number starting with "5" or "6" (after any letter prefix). For example, one plausible configuration is a pair of HM65256 chips.

Re: Rastan unpleasantness
There's a schematic here if you haven't found one already. If the display glitches less with audio turned down, that might indicate power issues. One possibly related thing on the schematic is that the "12V" rail seems to be labeled "+13V," both in the supply section and for the audio power amp. If you're handy with an iron you might want to try replacing the main filter caps (C1-C6), which ought to be showing some age by now.
