Static / Noise using PS2 optical out

Hey people, I just picked up a PS2 along with Gradius V. I also got an optical cable to hook up to my receiver for the best audio quality. However, when using the optical out, it seems like I'm getting some static/noise type sounds occasionally. It seems to happen consistently at certain points, for instance during the level 2 cutscene where you encounter the duplicate Vic Viper. Using the analog audio cables this doesn't happen. Did I just get a bad cable, or is there some other issue?
