Western shmup console releases last 10 years

Post by doctorx0079 »

Could some of you hardcore collectors make a list? Recently we've got Raiden Fighters and Raiden IV was announced, right?

EDIT: updated topic to console releases. Listing Western arcade shmup releases is not very helpful as you can count them on one hand.

So far we have:

PS2
Gradius III & Gradius IV
Gradius V
R-Type Final
Raiden III
Shikigami no Shiro / Mobile Light Force 2 (>_>)
Shikigami no Shiro II / Castle of Shikigami 2
Silpheed: The Lost Planet
Gunbird Special Edition
XII Stag
1945 I&II
Steel Dragon Ex
Capcom Classics Collection
Capcom Classics Collection 2
Taito Legends 2

PAL only:
Dragon Blaze
Homura
Psyvariar Complete
Sengoku Ace (as Samurai Aces)
Sengoku Blade (as Tengai)

DC
Giga Wing
Giga Wing 2
Gunbird 2
Mars Matrix

GC
Chaos Field
Ikaruga

360
Raiden Fighters Aces
1942 Dual Strike
Ikaruga
Aegis Wing

PS3
1942 Dual Strike

I can recall these offhand, for PS2, Dreamcast and Gamecube (North America):

PS2

Gradius III & Gradius IV
Gradius V
R-Type Final
Raiden III
Shikigami no Shiro / Mobile Light Force 2 (>_>)
Shikigami no Shiro II / Castle of Shikigami 2
Silpheed: The Lost Planet

DC

Giga Wing
Giga Wing 2
Gunbird 2
Mars Matrix

GCN

Chaos Field
Ikaruga

Not including Capcom, Taito, Namco etc compilations, which have quite a few shooters between them.

edit: added Gamecube.

You also should include Working Designs' release of Thunderforce V + Raystorm, THQ's G-Darius and Squaresoft USA's Einhander release as well. Might include SCEA's Raiden Project with it's funky controller scheme if you play it in tate but a Gameshark/Goldfinger code fixes that slight problem anyways. ^_~

All of these should be listed under the "PAL only" subheading, the US never got any of them.

Though they're not out yet, Raiden IV (360) and Illvelo (Wii) have been announced as coming this way later this year.

Those aren't from the last 10 years like the others, though. I think G-Darius was the latest (1998)

Sanvein got a US release as well. Then there is Philosoma, but don't think that is within 10 years, was one of the first PS1 games I think.

I know the point of this thread is to list games, and not to talk about them in detail, but I do want to mention how TERRIBLE this version of the game is just in case someone thinks about trying to find it. The whole thing is busted. First, the game isn't entirely translated. Entire chunks of text (such as, oh, the ending) are still 100% in Japanese. If you try to play it on a PS2 or PS3 (which most people will) the controls don't map correctly and the buttons are effectively randomly distributed across the controller. Also on the PS2/3, the graphics often completely spaz out and the display will get clippy/choppy/shitty for no reason. It will often go back to normal quickly, but it's still incredibly disorienting.

Even at the original release price of $10 this isn't worth it. Stay away.

I'm curious; why are you looking for releases within the last 10 years and not releases within the last 3 generations?

Wii Virtual Console (only games not previously released in the US 10+ years ago on other platforms)
--
Gradius II: Gofer no Yabou
Cho Aniki
Final Soldier
Star Parodier
Super Fantasy Zone (only sort of counts as it did get a European release on Genesis, but this is its first release in the US, the Genesis one was EU/JP only)
Detana!! Twinbee (got European arcade release, but that's it for the West, and neither got home versions such as this TG16 one)

DS
--
Konami Classic Series Arcade Hits (Twinbee ("Rainbow Bell" here) had not previously had a US release; other shmups that had been released in the US before are on it too, such as Gradius, etc)

First this is important to note. Europe seems to get more shooters than the US, on PSX, Saturn, SNES, PS2...

This too. It's unbelievably poorly done. I think the most important missing feature actually, though, is saving. Losing high-score save is annoying but not crippling, but the loss of saving for Original mode is really bad. Without being able to save your character, the entire mode is essentially completely irrelevant... so of course they removed it. Thanks.

Also, they didn't just not translate the endings... they completely removed nearly all of the other story scenes, leaving in like one text block in the whole game (where you select a route; that was translated). The original version actually has story!

Hey cool thread. Kudos to whoever thought of it. I am a bit of a nintendo fanboy and I have to say I love my Wii. It has satisfied my shmup cravings better than any system before it. This is of course mostly due to the VC shmups but it has its share of retail disc and wiiware shooters also. I think I'll try and list all of those here.

Wii Retail Disc Shmups:
Blast Works (also includes Gunroar, rRootage, Torus Trooper and the original Tumiki Fighters)
Ultimate Shooting Collection (Radio Allergy; Karous; Chaos Field)
The Monkey King: The Legend Begins (I found this fun horizontal cute 'em up in the $10 bin at Wal~Mart)
Saint (Soon to be released follow up to The Monkey King)
Ocean Commander
Astro Boy (Not yet released but reportedly about a third of the game is horizontal shmup levels)
Geometry Wars (sorta shmupy)

WiiWare:
Gradius ReBirth (horizontal)
Star Soldier R (vertical)
Protöthea (It's sorta like Geometry Wars)
Space Invaders Get Even (sorta shmupy)
Gyrostar (sorta shmupy)

DS:
Underwater Attack (horizontal)

It seems that UFO Interactive is doing what it can to get gamers in the US their share of shmups. Good for them.

@ Diebythesword... Yeah it sure is Ocean Commander, good catch :D . I didn't know about Ocean Commander I just have the DS version. Gee that game has been released on Wii PS2 PC DS and who knows what else. It is just so difficult to even find out what exists out there. I glad I found this thread, if people keep contributing to it I'm bound to find some great shooters I would have otherwise missed.
