What should I do with this? (First stick! Namco PSX)

Post by Seelen »

Ok, so I saw this for $3 the other day and just HAD to get it (had been longing for a stick anyways):

I played a little Gradius V with it. It was harder at first, but then it was way WAY better. It works fairly well right now, but I'm wondering if there are certain "standard" mods to do with it?

I see people rave about Sanwa parts, is that something I should be thinking of? In the scheme of things, is this a pretty decent stick, or are others far superior?

Thanks in advance, I'm still pretty new to things, so I'm just learning as I go.

3 bucks for a Namco PSX stick?!?!?! score

Don't know about mods for it personally, but hell of a bargain there :)

You can mod it (I have with mine) to sanwa parts but I honestly wouldn't bother, its a total pain in the ass. The buttons are easy enough to swap, but the stick. ughhhh

Getting a JLF in there is indeed possible, but its a good enough stick as it is, so I'd change the buttons if anything, or just leave it like it is.

great score, now enjoy it :)

On sticks that low profile, I generally don't bother doing anything with the lever unless something's wrong with it. It's just not worth the time and effort that could be better spent modding a Mayflash or something.

thanks guys. That guide really does looks like a pain in the ass...although it sounds fun at the same time. I think I'll just use this for now, and if something ever happens to it I'll get to cutting.

I guess I'm just curious how much better the sanwa parts are than these hori ones.

It's a very simple guide. The only bad thing is that the shaft is a little tall, with this mod, but believe me: it's not a problem. I have - for mame use - a namco stick (full sanwa), modded with this guide, and works greatly. For example, in my candy - with "normal" sanwa sticks - i've obtained 20 millions, with Blazing Star. With the namco stick, and with a little practice, i've obtained 22 millions. So, the tall shaft is not a problem. :)

If there is one stick out there with knock-off parts that doesn't need to be modded, it's the Namco Stick. Just keep the stick as it is and enjoy it.
