Best Danmaku?

Post by Reive »

New here! Hiya!
I've been dying to play some bullet hell/danmaku/curtain fire games.
The only shmups I've played are mostly random homebrew and retail console, like Mushihimesama and Espgaluda on PS2, and Ikaruga and Triggerheart Exelica on XBLA.

Right now I'm looking for any vertical danmaku for PC, retail or free doesn't matter to me right now.

Any suggestions?
I really need to fill this craving!

my own favorites

as for arcade game emulation: MAME; anything by Raizing, Cave, Takumi or Psikyo is a good start.

there's a zillion of these threads already...

but I recommend Blue Wish Resurrection
"I think Ikaruga is pretty tough. It is like a modern version of Galaga that some Japanese company made."

Try BWRP (Blue Wish Resurrection Plus)
It looks similar to Mars Matrix(Rob don't hit me for comparing the two) & easy to pick up while still offering difficulties & settings for more experienced players, also it's completely free of charge: http://www004.upp.so-net.ne.jp/x_xgameroom/
Be sure to check out x.x's other stuff too.

EDIT: Oh, kengou beat me to it

Aside from the fact that they both have gold cube sprites and generally look like total ass, they're really not that alike. BWR borrows more from Ketsui than anything.

Yes, I stand corrected. I was actually trying to say something like "On first sight it looks like a MM clone" but just shortened it to "It's similar to MM".
Blame it on my English grammar...

Cho Ren Sha is one of the best, if not THE best, freeware shooter. You might not consider it bullet hell though.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

Yes, Cho Ren Sha is awesome and all that but I wouldn't call it a "Danmaku STG"

I'm having trouble playing Blue Wish Resurrection Plus - if I try to play in full screen mode everything runs super fast, so fast that pressing up/down in the title menu causes it to move up/down about 10 times instead of once. My FPS counter is sky high as well.

I have this same problem when trying to run Embodiment of Scarlet Devil and Stella Vanity, they all run fine in window mode but obviously I'd prefer to play in full screen.

If anybody has any suggestions they'd be very much appreciated.

Yeah the 'uber-sensitive' menu is normal, there's no delay between button presses(I think) - but like Johnny5 my game runs at solid 60.

Go to display settings, hit advanced, go to monitor and make sure your screen refresh rate is 60.

Eh don't really like BWR+, I've played it before (as i've said most I play are freeware/indie games).

And what's wrong with Touhou? One of my fav series, there are just too many games, and in the games usually too many options (like characters and styles or whatever).

Shoot The Core is one of my main sources, along with another called something like 'ultimate shmup listings', most of the games there don't seem to be Bullet Hell, and even the ones that are feel kinda generic (sorry if that offends any creators)

And can I get a list of MAME games to look for? I've been playing ESP.ra.de(sp?) on MAME for awhile, any of the newer games like Mushihimesama Futari or Espgaluda 2 emulated yet?

Found this within the first week of it's release, love this game!

Pretty good I'd say, but yeah I don't really consider it Bullet Hell, I'll keep it though.

Patriot Dark is amazing. If you like a bit more Pskyoish Danmuku try Zap's games like Sonic Sisters. Le Souer De Barrage is probably the best one though, it mixes Bullet Hells with more broad precision based boss attacks. It's mouse based but that's a good thing the kind of speed and precision you need in this game requires a mouse. This is my 2nd favorite shmup of all time and gets my highest recommendation.

Yeah, the FPS counter stays at about 3000 and the game runs at super speed, I literally just reached the end of stage 1 in about 10 seconds.

I thought my refresh rate might have been set to 100 after I read this but I just checked and it's 60, thanks for trying though.

My Google searches have come up empty apart from one person who seems to have had the same problem a few years ago with EoSD, didn't mention a fix though.

Any ideas are welcome.

No problem. I had it off, too, back in the day. Took me a goodly bit of time to figure out why I was going at a trillion miles an hour.

My personal feeling is it's the best freeware shooter I've played, and miles better than that Touhou ass.
In fact, it's one of my all time favourite shmups, just trying to figure out a way to get it running in my cab now.

I just wish someone could hack it so it can be TATE'd. Same goes for Blue Wish Resurrection and the other games by that guy.

It's not actually in the right aspect ratio to be TATEd, IIRC.

While that is true, squeezing it into TATE would still look better than pulling it out to fill a horizontal screen.

Added fake scanlines to BWR+ as some people thinks this is an ugly game.

No, Cho Ren Sha looks awful like that, and BWR+ looks like half the screen is missing.

Bad idea.
