- switch between the kernel on your Xbox360 and the kernel on Cygnos360 V2 (for example for region-code switching or switching to homebrew/exploitable kernel)
I'm surprised no one jumped on this news seeing so many people complaining the costs and troubles getting a JP 360 to play their shmups. Has anyone tested this chip yet?
there have been ways to change the region of your 360 in the past. It was chip based, but you need to hook it up to your pc when you wanted to swap regions.
Hardware Modding (as opposed to firmware modding) is a real pain, and its not my sorta thing.
I would argue its easier to get a JP360, then it is to get someone to mod your 360. Granted if you have the skills yourself it may be a different story. Last time I was looking, the chip manufacturers would not install chips for you, and finding services to do such is very difficult.
Sounds nice, even a LOT cheaper than to buy a J360.
The only bad thing is that i comes empty, you'll have to flash it by yourself ..... And, as far as i've been searching there's not much support in the ussual places (xbox-scene and similar places)
I've been thinking about this a bit, and it looks like a region change is also possible using the Infectus mod chip.
I'm not really interested in anything other than Ketsui, but it looks like 2nd-hand Arcade systems are popping up on my local craigslist for under $100. Plus I'm itching to do some kind of case modding now that I've done pretty much everything I reasonably can to my mini-ITX PC, and X360 seems like a neat thing to try if I can get one cheap. Will probably try shoving it into a mATX box or Lian Li XB-01 or something.
Anyway, I'm not that keen on playing burned games, just a region change. Anybody know if it is possible to install the mod chip, do the region change offline, and then remove the chip? Might be a slightly cheaper, though riskier alternative to importing a system.

Just because you have the chip, nobody's forcing you to burn games, right? Or is it a possible Live! ban you fear?

So are kernels copyrighted content in the same way a game would be? I'd find it sad if so, for those who'd just want a region change. "I'm not playing burnt games, but I'm using someone else's stolen kernel!"

Yes, it is this exactly. Although I haven't really looked into it much at all. Are banned systems still able to download system updates and game patches and such?

usually you put the quotes above your text to avoid confusion.
I emailed a UK modding service about the region switch and Infectus mod chip - They replied that hopefully they'll be able to offer the service soon but that Microsoft were trying to stop it (either the region switch or mod chip?). They will know more in the next couple of weeks. I'll update if I hear anything else.
It seems that going online with a region switched machine won't be possible - so no DLC then...
