Black Sun Empire - it's all over

Post by Skykid »

Thank god for the Netherlands!

How the hell Black Sun Empire escaped me in my search for some decent Drum n Bass, I don't know, especially as they appear to have been around a good while.

These guys are better than good though - just listening to Cruel and Unusual, the second album (2005) and it is absolutely mindblowing.

The search in this thread...

http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.ph ... 75&start=0

...Is officially over! Hail to the Dutch kings of D&B!

And look, a videogame connection:
wikipedia wrote:They also recently lent one of their tracks ("Arrakis") to the E³ 2006 trailer of the game EVE Online titled "No Other Destiny".
And here's said trailer:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jOJR5Xa ... re=related

Rubbish for about a minute...and then the music starts.

Why can't shmups have music like this :(
Seriously, Cave, meet Black Sun Empire, they lend music tracks to game related shenanigans! :p

I#m living near the Netherlands and saw BSE quite a few times.

Especially their old stuff is really worth listening if you are into "Neurofunk"

I really recommend Noisia, also from the Netherlands and very similar to BSE.

Also check out Phace and misantroph

I'm all over it. BSE is like, the best thing I managed to miss in ever. Fucking amazing.

The Dutch are owning.

yeah! but I think this "dutch style dnb" is just the next level of what Ed Rush & Optical and a few others did back in the nineties.

It's sooooo goooood! (you can tell I've got my headphones in! :P )

I like my D&B really dark, and this fits the bill perfectly - but the ambient balance is just right. Never heard it called 'Neurofunk' until now, but if that's what it is, well, then that's what I like.

Here in germany it's very popular too.

Here is a live set of Misantrop and Phace you might enjoy.

Thanks Exe, getting it now :D

EDIT: Sounds great, I'll have to leave it running during the day tomorrow (well over 2hrs there!)

It doesn't sound strictly D&B though, what category do these guys fall under?

If this is the set I"m thinking of, its really really good. Misanthrop and Phace are definetely the kings of Neurofunk.

BSE are very good too, but their style of composure is a little too simplified for my tastes. I remember going to a show of theirs when one of them came through Utah. They def know how to get a crowd amped up!

Never played Karous? You should. Illmatic Envelope has some good stuff too.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

As I said, this style of dnb is called "Neurofunk" over here, dunno if that's a common genre in the UK.

It's basiclly halfstep dnb with lots of mid range and mostly without any MCs.

My favs of this genre are Noisia, I saw them once in an underground parking garage and they absolutley smashed it.

Here's a small Video where the guys introduce themselves and their sound

enjoy! :D

That's a pretty funny interview!

Thanks for all the info guys, I feel I'm set for a good while.

@ MathU, I haven't actually played Karous, I'll go and check out some vids.

Heh, nope - another shooter by the company that did Karous, also known as "Illvelo."

I found some Karous vids on ebay - the music is as MathU said, and pretty damn cool!
It looks like quite an interesting shmup - some kind of Giga Wing force reflect going on. What's the general consensus on it?

Erm, make that `You should... listen to the OST and never ever get poisened by the game itself`.
Karous is horrible and a defacing of Radirgy. :(

I think it's pretty fun. It's a lot different than Radirgy though.

Crap, that's disappointing, especially since it has such a promising soundtrack.

Neurofunk, eh? I thought it was just called Darkstep.

I love my DnB dark. Recently got into Future Prophecies's Bring the Noise! :D

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jme5uV5hNPk

Quality sucks, so I suggest picking up the track and listen to the sick bassline.

Its hard to keep track of all the different subgenres in dnb. Does my head in sometimes. :x. I guess the tech sound was originally called "techstep". Pioneered by Ed Rush and Optical.

Future Prophecies have made some pretty cool tracks no doubt. I kinda liked "trolls and fairytales" and "illusion of time"

Skykid - I checked the youtubes' out. Arrakis wins, the other tracks don't do it for me.

Not necessarily. It depends, really. I enjoy stuff like Calyx's Dead Ringer or )EIB('s Forgotten. Andy C just happens to play some dark stuff too and he definitely knows how to get a crowd going. :D

Yeah, that's Black Sun Empire. Their albums have some very similar and equally good (if not better) tracks on them.

Can you imagine if it was a final boss theme or something?

I reckon the end boss/tlb musics for Battle Garegga, Ketsui, Karous, DDP Dai-Fukatsu and Psyvariar are all up there wih Black Sun Empire in terms of raw, pulse-pumping music.

Karous's secret last boss theme if you're wondering.

Psyvariar is a winning game soundtrack. First time I got to the last two stages on that I couldn't believe my ears (as you probably well remember Rupe. )

Black Heart's music is raw fer sure - sounds like that sick stuff you used to listen to.

@ Ka0tiK: I like that, nice track. :o I'll investigate some others...
