I'm a vert guy. Horis typically don't work for me. There are a few notable exceptions though (Progear, R-Type Leo, Blazing Star).

Oy... it really depends on my mood.

As of late its been hori all the way. But about 6 months ago I was a sheer vert fella. This time next month I could be back to verts. *shrugs*

Hehe...I suppose that wasn't the greatest choice for a title, was it?

Ah well...I find most of the time I prefer horizontal side-scrollers, though there are some vertical games I like such as Raiden, Gun Frontier, Captain Skyhawk, Robo Aleste, Dragon Spirit etc.

Well I has just mainly a vert guy, but since playing Gradius 1, I'm maybe 70% Hori and 30% Vert.

It doesn't matter to me. To be honest, I love vert and hori shmups all the same. IMO, horizontal shmups have the better soundtracks. BUT, if I had to choose with a gun pointed to my head, I'd probably go with vert. I love manic shmups way too much. 8)

Verts. Something about the trajectory with horzies throws me. It's just more natural to jink left and right than it is up and down. Heh....I remember playing Darius Gaiden in Mame with a Tated monitor and adjusted controls. Oddly enough, I went two stages farther than I ever had before, even considering I had never faced those bosses before.

Hori.

I just feel like they have more variety, overall, than verts do. Maybe it's due to terrain, I dunno, but most verts (even the best) still give me a "been there, done that" feeling that I don't get as often with horis.

Horis all the way!
Nothing beats the atmosphere & feel of a good horizontal shmup.

TATE'd verts. Normal screen verts like Giga Wing feel stange. I love my horis but I like my verts just that little bit more.

My friend claims by changing to Tate he actually improved in multiple shmups. I have yet to test this theory but it stands to reason w/ more screen in front of your ship you would be able to react faster/better.

the bigger the screen, the easier to see the whole thing, obviously....
playing in yoko on a small screen...wait, actually i cant play on yoko on a small screen, dont even want to.
hell even tate on a small screen is too small for me, because my eyeseight is bad, a mid sized TV in tate is about perfect, but i can live with it.

I will attest to this. It makes a HUGE difference...not just a little one.

Before I became an avid shmup fan, the most experience I had was with R-TYPE and Gate of Thunder, so it was just horizontal shooters.

After I got more PC Engine shmups and a Saturn, I became mainly a vert fan all the way. Progear is hori but that game is in a class all its own. I just find vertical shooters more viceral somehow, hard to describe.

Yeah, definitely vertical, in proper TATE. Games can play vastly differently in home conversions depending on whether you're playing "regular" 4:3 or proper TATE. For example, Layer Section on SS is a totally different game TATE'd then standard (and a much better one to boot)

verts and horis are both great. i am an equal opportunity enthusiast. however, lately its been nothing but Gradius and R-type. when i can get a dedicated tate tv, things will change.

I enjoy vertical shmups the most but really I don't mind horizontal either.

I play almost exclusively verts. But I plan to get Gradius V once I get a PS2, so I'll probably spend a lot of time on that.

Now we have two captains! :)

Tough call but at the end of the day, when looking back on my long & distinguished shmupping career, I have more fond memories of horizontals.

If I draw the list of all the shooters I like, I get nearly 50% / 50%. Yet I'm inclined to say I prefer horis. Two reasons - too few verts IMO feature interaction with landscapes, which I think should be part of the genre. Manics ignore that completely. Second reason - too few horis today (and in the past few years), I'm on the site of the weak, underrepresented minority 8)

I've come to the conclusion that I'm a Hori guy apart from the odd stint at Radien 1+2 :)

Gradius why did you have to convert me?

Was it the sweet flowers or the chocolates you sent me?

I didn't know I would eventually fall in love with the Hori way!

I love both for what they are. Usually, I like horis to be more subtle, based on atmosphere and such (like in Metal Black, Darius, Gaiares etc), that might be the reason to why I never liked Progear (sucky music and bright, blurry graphics). In verts, I usually demand a little more action.
