Interest Check: Shmups Forum plays a video game

Post by Necronopticous »

Hey guys,

I had an idea, and I'm wondering if it piques anyone's interest.

I was thinking it would be cool to choose some game and play it together over a month. There would be a thread where everyone interested in playing could discuss it and post screens of their progress and whatnot. One of my favorite things to do is to play games with or at the same time as friends and have good, relevant conversation about them. It is also a really good opportunity and reason for people to play a great game they've never experienced alongside others, or take on some sort of challenge or high-level play they otherwise wouldn't really have to drive to try.

I figured we could try it out next month if there is sufficient interest, and continue it in following months if it goes well.

Does this sound interesting or fun to you?

I suppose this could be a good idea.

I mean, I'd participate. Though I'm not sure how we'll be posting up stuff without it being our score or a continue screen.

I wasn't necessarily talking about shmups, just good video games in general.

I'm guessing something older we can all play on emulator? Sure I'm down.

Edit:
how about we find a few games that a couple of us think are really awesome but most of us haven't played and base it off of that.
I did great so much water and milk that I threw up when I was little.

one month isn't too much? though In that 2D Gaming forum from Ceph we had something like that, but it only lasted one week for each game and in the end, the week would usually end before most people had tried the game.

Maybe it could be 2 weeks? I dunno.

Or maybe leave it at one month indeed.

A game of the month sounds a bit better than game of a week. If you can completely destroy a game in just one week, it probabally wasn't that great to begin with.

I'd be for it. They do pretty much what you described on racketboy.com, but I've never felt the urge to take part there. For me at least it'd have to be a month or so long. I only ever finish the shortest games in less than 2 weeks.

Yeah, like I said, I didn't like the 1 week deadline there. But I thought 1 month maybe would be too much.

But whatever.

I like the idea. Especially if it is something on an emulator or that can be played on a PC without too much fuss (yeah, cave story is the idea, even though I already completed it :( ).

Only thing I fear, is that it would become a sort of speedrun of everybody trying to complete it before the others, and discussing topics taken from Gamefaqs.
But I can't see it happening too much on shmups, to tell the truth.
We're cooler than that 8)

you should all download ggpo so we can have a street fighter tournament :D

(actually i wish you were talking about shmups, i should be playing these things shouldn't i? :( )

it's a pretty neat idea, but unlike spoken conversations, i think if you were playing a normal game, you'd have to worry about things like spoilers and that kinda shit. although i have ruined many good games for people in real life conversations too

Only if it's a live stream. I've wasted many nights watching Japanese people play shmups and stuff, which I find enjoyable.

That Game of the week thing is on to round 2, and it has a different system to pick a GotW. Games are submitted and a randomizer picks a game.

I'd love to do this. I need a reason to play videogames now instead of doing nothing...
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

I tried to start a high score thread for Lumines and the mods shut it down and insisted that I post it at Ceph's 2d gaming forum. As I do not post on that dead wasteland of lame the thread was never (re)created.

Long story short: Make sure it's a 3d RPG or some weird dorky shit like that so your thread doesn't get shitcanned

I demand a King's Field session! No, better, a Shadow Tower Abyss session!

Some call it weird dorky shit, I call it an awesome game.

Don't take it too personally, I just like to swear and cause controversy

I can't get into RPG's though. I used to play final fantasy 7 all the time as a kid but I don't have the patience anymore

Such a shame too.

I'd love to compete in Lumines where people are active and actually play…

As for this concept, the idea is solid, but I do not have time and patience to participate

I used to go about like the OP as a youth. I spent many hours on the telephone while playing Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior with my friend. These is how we were able to progress through these games before the days and times of internets :P
