Toaplan shit

Post by Neon »

1984 - Jong Ou
1985 - Performan
1985 - Jong Kyou
1986 - Guardian / Get Star
1986 - Mahjong Sisters
1988 - Rally Bike / Dash Yarou
1989 - Demon's World / Horror Story
1991 - Vimana
1991 - Teki Paki
1991 - Ghox
1992 - Pipi & Bibi's / Whoopee!!
1993 - Enma Daio
From the list posted by incog. in shmups chat

Has anyone tried any of these. I love Wardner and Snow Bros as I know I have mentioned here ad nauseum, it would be great if there was some other platforming gold from this company

I'm guessing Mahjong Sisters is a version of that weird card game?

I thought it was that V-V game but then V-V showed up later in the list

Is it playable on mame or genesis?

rally bike is exactly what it sounds like, a top-down 2D racing game, hard as nails and extremely memoriser heavy.. good fun in short bursts tho :) cheap board.

Vimana is a shmup, i always found it quite bland but it has all the usual toaplan makings.. nice gfx, great tunes etc.. quite a rare board tho.

Vimana works in MAME but has no sound. I have the PCB, but haven't played it much as I (as sven666 says) also think it's a bit bland.

Jong Ou, Jong Kyou, and Mahjong Sisters are all mahjong games (aka "that weird card game"). I think I tried Mahjong Sisters once, but I have never seen the other two.

Ghox is an Arkanoid / Breakout game. Some interesting stages and power-ups, but Arkanoid has never been my thing. I have been told it is sexy awesomeness though.

Teki Paki is a well-based block puzzle game, along the lines of Tetris. I am absolutely horrible at this game.

Guardian is a scrolling beat 'em up. As I recall, it has a gun power-up which is invaluable. I also remember the game being very short. Like shorter-than-Psikyo-first-loop short.

Enma Daio is a fortune-telling machine, not a game. It is the machine which dispensed Skykid's mystery cards, if you remember that thread.

Guardian / Get Star was one of my favourite games when I was in my teens. I remember clearing about 16 loops on one credit. The difficulty is only raised for the first four loops, first loop; 4 hits = dead. Loop 4 -> infinity; 1 hit = dead.

In this horizontal game, you play as a robot that can kick/punch it's way through 5 or 6 autoscrolling planets/stages. You jump by pulling up on your joystick. Picking up red balloons will give you a stronger punch (glowing fist full auto is the best) and also a Tiger Heli powerup appears that'll give you different, time limited powerups or increase your health/shields depending on color.

Yellow-Invicibility, Blue-lazer gun (not so hot actually) or Red-shield up.

As in Flying Shark, when you get to the loops, stage 1 is skipped.

I like the you're a giant stage of Get Star

Ghox is a sort of Arkanoid style game in a fantasy setting. Rally Bike is on the X68000, I have that one. It's a racing game where you have to pick up gas and so it's not much fun for me.

Performan is a top-down isometric puzzle / action game.

Vimana - Feels stylistic very much in line with the Tatsujin series. Nice graphics (especially on later stages) and sound. Game relies heavily on use of charge shot, while firepower increases with the speed of button presses, autofire thus makes it extremely easy. Fun game to relax with.

Dash Yarou - Like Sven said, pretty fun, but also quite difficult. This was also ported to Famicom/NES and X68k.

Demon's World - Sidescrolling Run 'N Gun game with autoscrolling. The controls are really floaty, including a jump that is both way too high and way too slow. There's a pretty close port on PC Engine Super CD.

Ghox is the Toaplan game I most want to play. It looks amazing. Really rare board though, I believe.

Vimana is indeed bland. We played it to the counter stop purely because we were curious and it was possible on a two player game.

I have both the Demon's World board and PC Engine Super CD. I find the board hard and the controls floaty, as CIT says.

I had Demon's World...I love Toaplan but I hated that game. The controls really pissed me off...ended up selling it. Just wasn't my cup of tea.

I have Rally Bike and it's a decent cheap ass motorcycle racer. You can pick up the working board for around $15 :D Worth it IMO....there's some neat tricks and stuff.

Ghox was on my must-buy list....until I found out that you need an Arkanoid-style spinner to play it....something I don't want to install in my candy. It's a damned hard board to find too.

Pipi and Bibi's LOOKED something like Bubble Bobble or Snow Bros, but I've never played it and the only ones I ever see for sale are all in Europe.

You could always get Snow Bros 2: With New Elves :D That was pretty good too.

Oh yeah...and V-V is Grind Stormer...I didn't see anyone mention that so I thought I'd throw it out there.
<@scootnet> if you were a real gamer, you could jerk it to Super Metroid box art

Not a shitload of buttons, but a spinner that is also a joystick.

Don't even know what that's called. Basically, a thingy that not only lets you shoot your Arcanoid paddle from left to right, but also enbles you to move it up and down the screen ...uh, you get the idea. :P

Pipi & Bibi's is a soft-core porn game. It's like Gals Panic combined with Bubble Bobble or Mappy. It's been in MAME for ages.
