Gradius V problem w/ New PS2

Post by Erinu »

My new slimline PS2 has been giving me some problems with games like Gradius V and Gradius III & IV, as in it's FUCKING NOISY and this only happens with those two games. But I'm not stupid.. chances are it's because they aren't DVD based.. so my question is, is there a way to fix this?

I would simply burn the game to a DVD, but my PS2 is new and hasn't been modded.

It's interesting to hear this problem never went away with the newer iterations of the PS2. I have a later-model fat PS2 and it also grinds away when playing that disk, causing me to worry about the disk drive eventually wearing out.

The interesting thing is that although blue disk games do generally run noisier, Gradius V is the worst from my experience. It's rather quiet when playing Raiden 3 (US), which is also a blue disk.

If your PS2 is still working, I guess there's nothing to be done except continue to endure it. One possible idea is to apply some weight to the top by putting a book or some other moderately heavy object on it (since it is a flip top instead of a sliding tray).

It's SO annoying.. but then I turned my PS2 horizontal again and hey, look, no more noise! Somehow it's quieter, but there is next to no room in this small ass Japanese apartment. The noise sounds as loud as my 360, which is fucking ridiculous. Maybe I could keep it on top of my PC case, though, that isn't really safe I guess...

Burning the game to dvd will most certainly make it quieter right? Just cuz it was developed for a blu-based CD based release doesn't mean anything?

You can covert this to DVD so as to save you laser from wear and unnesessary noise

and yes Gradius V is a very noisy disc

Interesting, I had the same issue with Gradius V (see post in General Chat). My slimline PS2 was only two weeks old so I had nothing to loose and traded it for another new, boxed and sealed slimline PS2. Upon receipt of the new console I figured that the disc still makes more 'humming' noises then the normal discs, but the harsh, loud cracking noises are gone luckily. Now hoping that they stay gone for good. I am not sure if the harsh, loud noises could damage either the disc the system. I guess not, but at the PS helpdesk they could not answer my question. Thet did not even know the game 'Gradius'... I also send a mail to Konami Deutschland GmbH (in perfect German using Google translator :) ) but they never replied. Oh well.
