the game you'd NEVER sell, no matter what.

Post by Super Laydock »

So I've been selling off some stuff lately too fund a holiday.

But I was thinking of all the (+- 1000 or so) games) I own, really what would be the last I'd give up and would like to keep on forever.

Not necessarily the best game, or the rarest, or whatever, also counting in flair, packaging, emotional relation with it, etc.
But, what would be the 1 game I'd keep till I die (dramatizing drumroll)? ie my most valued game possession...

no, it's not a shmup.
In fact I'd sell all my shmups if necessary, but will never consider giving this one up.

It's the 1 game that ALWAYS makes me feel well, happy and to these days: young.

Penguin Adventure. :D

So what's yours?

Just the 1 game you'd NEVER sell.
(reasons why are appreciated!)

There are a bunch that I plan on never selling, though the first one to come to mind is Super Mario World - it's been re-released a handful of times and I've played it so much I know it like the back of my hand, but it's the first game that I ever really played at length, and I don't think I could ever bring myself to part with my SNES pack-in copy. It's basically the title that made me a gamer.

There's many games I would never sell, but one that specifically comes to mind is:

Chomakaimura (Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts), for Super Famicom

This was the first Japanese import I ever bought, and I had a friend's mom bring it from Japan for me in 1991. Have been playing imports ever since. :D

Bubble bobble - PS1

I recently bought a bootleg PCB which is getting jamma'fied as I speak. Its one of those games you just can't let go off.

Well here are the games of which I have held onto for well over 15 years:

NES:
Mega Man
The Guardian Legend
Ninja Gaiden
Clu Clu Land
Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt

As a child, I sold off my NES collection to fund the purchase of 16 bit games, but the above mentioned (except SMB/DH), I couldn't part with even though I had "outgrown" NES. In the year of 2000, I had got into video games again, and while at Funco with some friends, I got a serious itch to play NES, bought some cheap games, unpacked my NES and got into the hobby. I have since rebuilt my collection and this is where I am at today.

As for those 4 games (excluding SMB/DH), I still play them at least annually and love them just the same!

As of now, I really have a hard time to sell anything, especially since I have spent the last 8 years building up what I have, and I have pretty much hit the wall, which is good…

I think at this point my gaming interest has boiled down to its hard core... shooters and action games with strong score competition, basically. I'd only sell a quality hardcore game if I thought it'd been exhausted of competitive value, and even then I'm very fond of them at a simple fan level... even if I got ten million in Rayforce, I'm pretty sure I'd want it sat on my shelf as much as ever.

However the one title I categorically wouldn't sell is my PS2 copy of Silent Hill 2. It's got no scoring potential whatsoever in my eyes - I've never gotten the appeal of the series' endgame rankings. But it made a huge impression on me in 2001, and continues to endear itself when I comb through it again every couple of years. In a way, despite its entire philosophy being the antithesis of "hardcore gaming" (story, art, soundtrack, everything but gameplay given top priority), I regard it as just as pure an effort. By association I wouldn't easily ditch the other SH or MGS titles, but SH2 is the peak of that experience-oriented design for me.

It's also probably worthless at resale value (second reprint of a budget re-release) but honestly, I wouldn't care anyway.

The Guardian Legend :D
It has shooting, it has adventure, it has great music and a sound test to enjoy those musics…

LOL, I couldn't give away SMB/DH then and would be hard to give away now

Nothing. I can re-buy if I miss them.

Although oddly I've held onto my big box copies of the Carmageddon and Quake series (1-3 respectively), solely because they're on a really high shelf and have virtually zero resale value.

There's a mass of games I could keep on the shelf for sentimental value, but they wouldn't get played so sod it.

With most games, that's true.

But for a moment just imagine you couldn't repurchase and have the last copy of every game left.

Pick just 1 game.

Impossible for me then, I'm afraid. Anything I'd want to keep I've played to death so it'd never be played again :)

Only a few games I'd never sell, most have either a strong sentimental value or great music and memories. I'll just go through each system.

Megadrive: nothing, I can emulate it all anyway.
Sega CD + 32X: same as above

Sega saturn:
Panzer dragoon 1, zwei and saga
Virtua fighter 2, shining the holy ark
Nights and shining force 3 episodes 1-3 + the premium disc.
Radiant Silvergun and Battle Garegga

Dreamcast:
Maybe grandia 2 and border down
Shenmue 1 and 2.

PS2:
Probably alot of games I really love but they're all easy to find.
god hand, RE4, MGS etc.

Xbox and xbox 360:
Nothing hard to find but I couldn't get rid of

Otogi 1 and 2, panzer dragoon orta
Ninja Gaiden Black, JSRF
Vidi Vici Veni

I really hate getting rid of games in general even though although my collection is tiny compared to most online I always feel guilty over having too many unloved games.

But if I had to get rid of all but one game I think the game i'd hold onto is probably Landmaker on the Playstation. I don't play it anywhere near often enough, but I always dust it off when I feel i'm drifting away from games and it brings me right back without fail.

Its a great game and it reminds me of a time when the game stores around here were so much better than they are now, a time when even Game had a really good selection. I'd say out of all the games I have, those I bought around that period on the Playstation are the ones i'd like to hold onto for the longest.

Secret stages at stages 20, 30, 40, 50 are definintely in the game. I'm not good enough to get the rest if their are any.

I have the NTSC UC version which is 60hz and quite expensive.

The only games I've bought brand new and never sold are Futari 1.5 and Futari Black Label. So maybe those? Truth be told I've sold just about everything at one time or another - even my all-time fave shmup Ikaruga. I guess I'm not a long-time collector when it comes to games. I enjoy them when I have them for awhile, but when I no longer play them much, I just see a bunch of dollar signs floating over them, so off they go.

Jumping physics are totally screwed up, you can bubble through walls, you can use those same bubbles to jump diagonally through walls (you can't do this on the arcade version), plus they remixed the midi tune where it doesn't quite have that special magic.

Game I'd never sell, I have a lot I'd never ever part with (make that all my games), but if push came to shove and I ever had to sell, I'd never sell my Saturn copy of Bubble Symphony. It's just one of those magical games that keeps me coming back and I never get tired of.

the more expensive the game, the more likely you will to be to sell it "no matter what". think about it.

I say Thrust+ Platinum (Atari VCS, 2003)

A few years ago I would have said Steel Battalion for the original Xbox. (looks over at third Steel Battalion bundle). However I've since learned that there is no low I won't stoop to when a car payment is due. :?

kay, but please try to keep in the spirit of the topic and post that game you'd never let go off for emotional/sentimental/great experience reasons...

In the spirit of your comment I could mention stuff like DDP, which to me is THE most overrated shmup ever.

I shouldn't, but I've done that already now, I suppose....

I can't name a single one - there are oh so many unforgettable games that I feel like my life would be truly miserable without...

However, just to name stay, I don't think I can stay too away from my several copies of FFVI - when every time you play you go for the absurd, masochistic quest of getting all of Gau's rages, you understand that some very twisted love is at work.

Also: Turrican II, MGS2, Castlevania III NES, Vagrantstory, ICO, Colossus, Okami, Tactics Ogre, Super Aleste... Arggh, no I can't sell them, I love them all. :D
