Saturn Mode

This one is replay verified. Made a few errors in this one, including taking two Tracers to stage 5 which messed up the blue medal generation tricks on said stage, and missing the stage 7 100% destruction bonus. Also ended the credit with no lives left in stock as usual, so I still don't know if you get any lives remaining bonuses for clearing the game.
JP, if you're thinking of writing up an ST for the Strat Forum, I can contribute what I know about scoring with the BG02G, which I think if the best ship to use to get a high score with. Let me know if you need any information.

Meh, I got a new score (by 60,000) but I'm going to wait for the AC to post again.
I keep having stupid deaths. Particularly at the start of level 4... for some reason that part just kills me everytime.
The level 3 boss also sometimes gets a cheap shot off, i.e. sometimes a bullet goes where it typically doesn't.
Everything else except the level 6 boss is fine though... *sigh*
Oh yeah, does anyone know how the hell to keep your allies from dying during EVERY SINGLE BOSS FIGHT!? I never get any Stock bonus (aside from level 1).

- Stage 1 - Any (although I like Gunners)
- Stage 2 - Tracers (the boss' attacks tend to destroy all Options though)
- Stage 3 - Tracers (Gunners are easily destroyed, try to lead the Tracers to a safespot to keep them alive)
- Stage 4 - Tracers** (not recommended though, see note)
- Stage 5 - Any, if you kept some from Stage 4
- Stage 6 - Gunners (if they manage to survive the stage and get round the back of Nightmare, that is)
- Stage 7 - Tracers (lead them around the bullet clusters)
- Stage 8 - None (the boss destroys them at the start of the stage)

Damn, I just had an almost awesome run. I 1 lifed it all the way to Stage 6, then the rank enhanced mid-boss killed me with tiny blue missiles I couldn't see. Then I died once at the stage 6 boss. Then I died once in stage 7 because of rank. Then I had 1 life left, and I made it to the final boss fight but I highly doubt beating him on 1 life is feasible (though that level is super easy if you know what to take out first).
Meh, if I could just nail a solid run through stage 6 and figure out how rank affects it, I could have this game in the bag. Well... aside from the final boss, who consistently whips my ass.

Well, I 1CC'd it... in Arcade Mode.
Kind of strange, but I'll take what I can get! Anyways, my new scores are:

I think 03 is a good ship to use if you just want to play Hyper Duel like a straight shooter. The Armor aspect of 03 is fairly worthless, and the ship itself is almost as powerful as the 01/02 Armor modes, and the special attack is devastating.
But if you're playing for score I'd say 02 is the best bet since she can clear the screen better, and even hit enemies inside of walls. If I had been playing as 02 in Arcade I have no doubt I could have had 2.3 million, easily.
Oh, Icarus:
You do get points for lives left at the end of the game. The stock bonus becomes how many ships you have left at the all clear screen. Granted, this means if you 1LC the game you'll get a whopping *gasp* 50,000
, but I guess its still useful information.
Also, I don't believe a good strategy for the final boss exists. That final volley of attacks is insane, and is the only point at which I died during my AC run (and I died twice, so I better be getting good at 1 lifing Saturn Mode up to that point...).
Oh yeah, did Tecno Soft ever do any other games that had rank? I don't recall any of the Thunder Force games having it and I know Blast Wind doesn't. But I'll be damned if the rank in Hyper Duel can't turn the wimpy level 4 boss into a killer.

Ahh, thanks for that. I've never managed to ALL the game with lives remaining, as I get to the last boss at virtually maximum rank and it crucifies me.jp wrote:Oh, Icarus:

Just one thing: does anyone know where the 1UP is loacted? It shows a 1UP icon in the manual, but I've never personally come across one in the game.
I was watching my currently available replay for some kind of idea on how the final boss attacks, and I think I have an idea. The movement of the laser is dictated by the movement of the boss itself, as well as your location on screen in relation to the boss. The further above or below the boss you are when it charges up the laser, the more likely the boss is to sweep the whole height of the screen with it, taking you out, or trapping you so the green bullets can get you.jp wrote:Also, I don't believe a good strategy for the final boss exists. The boss does tend to move a bit erratically, but it almost always tries to line itself up you your ship so it can laser you. If you lure it to fire about mid-screen level, it might give you enough space to avoid the laser, while giving yourself some room to dodge the green bullets.
I have to try out that theory sometime.

The stage 4 boss is a cakewalk (aside from being whacked by the orb on it's back), it's the stage 6 boss that's the most evil at maximum rank.
