Best arcade horizontal shmups?

Post by Raizen1984 »

I'm getting into PCB collecting, but I don't want to have to constantly turn my heavy ass tube TV on it's side constantly. So, recommend me your all time favorite horizontal shmups!

I suggest you leave it tated. (all the time)

How big is the TV?

Also, my favorite hori shmups are Progear, R-Type II, and Blazing Star.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Sengoku Blaede / Blade aka Tengai is excellent if you want Psikyo vert gameplay in horizontal. G-Darius is great as well, and blows away the PS1 port.

But with the sheer number of quality arcade verts, I'd honestly just buy a second TV and leave it vertical.

I never measured it, but it's probably about 40". It's a big tube TV with a great picture, but you know how heavy TV's like that are. It would take an extra person for me to move it every time.

Lot's of votes for Progear so far. I'll have to check that one out. Totally agree with R-Type and Blazing Star too, classics!

Progear and pretty much every Gradius are great. Those are all the horis I really like though.

Also why do you need to tate your TV for horis? As far as I know, that's only beneficial for verts.

Progear is great, but really, you're missing out on 90% of arcade shmupping by not tating. If you're just running your stuff in standard def anyway, then you can pick up a good little 20" for pretty cheap and leave that as your Tate screen.

Yeah, there's a crapton of great verts I want to buy. I'm actually having a hard time finding normal 'non-HD' TVs anymore, and the few I can find are either crappy and used or too old to be of use with my supergun.

And is 'tating' like shorthand for rotating the TV?

R-type, R-type Delta, Gradius, G-Darius Tengai.

I feel like an idiot for almost forgetting G-Darius. Shit was too great.

There are some good arcade verts that are designed to be played on horizontally-oriented monitors, most notably Giga Wing and Mars Matrix. They're awesome games.

Aside from what's already been mentioned, I'll recommend X Multiply, In the Hunt, and Salamander 2.

Tate (tah-tay) is the Japanese word for vertical. On the forum it's been morphed into a verb for some reason.

I'm surprised it doesn't get more attention, too. It's such a cool little game.

Seconded. Mentioning G-Darius almost warrants mentioning Darius Gaiden.

Also, one point for Hyper Duel. Might not be everyone's cup of tea but damn if it doesn't look great. However, not sure how insane prices might be for this one.

Ignore Giga Wing, it's essentially Mars Matrix, but less fun.

While I have Taito Legends 2 and play G-Darius on that (as well as Darius Gaiden), I still pop in the PS1 port every now and then for boss rush mode. Though I agree, as far as the main game is concerned, the arcade version blows it away. However... Darius Gaiden is a slaughterhouse if you dive into it after a G-Darius run. Soooo fucking hard... And it's amazing what effects they were able to do with sprites back in '94. From the first boss splitting apart and each segment spinning upon death, to the representation of "you're in the eye of a goddamn hurricane" in one of the final stages, it was a feast for the eyes even now when you consider the timeframe of its release.

Artistic beauty aside, Darius Gaiden is an amazing game, and I'd recommend it... God, I have a hard time picking favorites between it and G-Darius so I'll just vouch for them both equally.

So, do you play Silk Worm as heli? I've always enjoyed it more with the jeep. And it's more like a run & gun that way to me, that's why I didn't mention it. Great and awesome game.

Yeah. That's just fucked up. This thread got to 20 posts with no mention of Darius Gaiden. I'm quitting this forum. See you guys.
