I was in a car accident.

Post by Square King »

Oddly enough, my last thought before I hit the concrete median was "I hope my guitar will be OK." :D

There's a freak blizzard heading through Oklahoma at the moment and I thought I'd head up to Stillwater (an hour's drive) to visit the girlfriend. It was nothing major when I left -- just medium rain, but it was quickly getting cold. Before I left, I talked with her mom and I arranged to pick up the gf's laptop since it just returned from a hard drive cleaning. So I'm southbound on the highway, heading under a bridge where the road conveniently bends and a pool of water was collecting.

I hit the pool at an angle and started to hydroplane. A thousand thoughts went through my head -- this could be the end, what if someone hits me, what if the bags don't deploy -- and it seemed to take forever. The airbag deployed at just the right moment and I had enough time to brace for impact. My car stopped, facing south, in the center of the 2-lane highway. I remember thinking, "Oh fuck, I think I'm OK." My nose was a little sore from the bag, but I did a quick mental inspection of myself and I felt fine. The car soon filled with smoke and I couldn't breathe, so I opened two windows and started to get out. A truck sped by on my side, so I looked back out the window -- luckily, there weren't many people on the road. I hopped out and started directing traffic to the opposite side of the road after I hit the emergency lights.

Once traffic died down a bit, I tried to move my car to the shoulder, but it wouldn't budge. So I stayed outside for a bit and called the gf's mom. I was still pretty exasperated but my thoughts were clear -- a good sign. She started heading my way. A state trooper arrived behind me and helped move traffic around. Another trooper showed up about 10 minutes later and boosted me to the shoulder. I had barely sat down in his cruiser and explained what happened when a truck driver knocked on his window. He explained that another, bigger accident occured about 200 ft. behind us and they needed help. The cop freaked out and looked at me. I told him I was fine and I had someone coming to get me, so he sped off. After chatting with my dad for a bit, I started the car. It was as if nothing happened; it drove great. I took it to a nearby gas station, met up with the gf's mom and we slowly took the frontage road to my house. Long story shortened somewhat, I'm fine but I'll need a new car before Monday to get to work. The car is technically totaled. There's nothing more sobering that being in an accident, I've discovered.

I've always prided myself on being an excellent and cautious driver, so this is a sad day.

If you guys wanna chip in and get me a Japanese Xbox 360 or mod my PS2, I'm totally down. 8)

Shit happens even to the best of drivers, so don't kick yourself for that.

Just play a round of Ikaruga or R-Type to make sure your eye-hand coordination is fine, and call us in the morning.
Don't hold grudges. GET EVEN.

it's amazing how things slow down in situations like that. i wish i could figure out how to harness that power in everyday life.

glad to hear you and the guitar are ok though  .

With my insurance company if the cost to fix the vehicle is more than something like (48%?) of the book value of the car- it's "totaled".

For Square King,

How fast were you going when you started to hydroplane? I recall once trailing behind a Corvette going 120mph in the rain. Sure, I knew that either one of us could wipeout at any second but that did not happen. Both of us kept our vehicles straight as possible going that fast. Sure, I've had my fair share of split second close calls of on-coming traffic barrelling towards me in my lane on a two lane country road...have had to suddenly brake to a complete stop and flip off the offending driver for his/her reckless driving shit. Driving defensively, calmly and rationally is the only way to survive a possible accident in these trying times nowdays. Road rage can happen at any time if you think the other driver was somehow pissed off by you and vice versa. The tailgaters on my ass are the worse offenders...tapping on the brakelight a bunch of times forces them back off my ass, especially if there is too much bunched up traffic in front of me anyways. ^_~

Especially the Bay Area traffic is notorius for some crazy last-second accidental inducing close calls. I've personally seen some folks barrelling down the highway at 80-100mph in the fourth left-hand lane and skirt across all four lanes just to take an off-ramp exit -- all this at the very last second...just fucking crazy. It's akin to playing Russian roulette with fate/death doing that stupid shit. How do they do it and get away with it? Where is the CHP when this shit goes down? ^_~

Probably mostly body damage, though the moving parts still work.

Anyways, glad to hear you're okay, SK.

I sort-of had an accident back on January 16, had the car spin out on snow and augur into a snowback. The worst part was when I went out to pick up a piece of trim and ended up falling on my left elbow (again!) - fracture. It's all healed up now, of course.

No matter how great a driver you are, you WILL have to rely on unfavorable weather conditions, some stupid shit popping up a second before you're supposed to hit it, or an idiot in another car ignoring the rules not fucking you up all of a sudden. In fact, I believe that a driver's worth is not made by avoiding dangerous situations, but rather doing well in dangerous situations that weren't their fault in the first place.

Glad that you're alright, though. You gotta be thankful it wasn't anything big.

I just started reading a book called Crash by J. G. Ballard. It's about this guy who has a romantic obsession with Elizabeth Taylor and an automobile fetish and wants to commit the ultimate symbol of sexual love by killing himself and her at the same time in a head on crash between their two cars. The novel features a lot of people masturbating or fucking while getting into car accidents and occasionally fucking the wounds of car accident victims.

In any case, what I'm trying to say is: it's a state a mind. You should just learn to get a boner off from your car accidents.

i did the same thing

broke my wrist skating(5th time for that wrist)....had the cast off for like 2 days, was walking down an alley in the winter....slipped on some ice and flew up horizontal...landed on my arm and fractured it in the same spot.....

double time with the cast too.....as it took twice as long to heal....3 months

ive broken my left wrist 5 times and my right 7  .....broken both ankles twice each(seperate times) dislocated my shoulders countless times ...broekn most of my fingers at least once and my left thumb is so fucked up now if i put weight on it to get up or lift something the wrong way it pops out of the joint....but i have been skating since '92

the last bad injury i had(that made me kinda lay off the skating finally...getting too old) i had ripped open my shin on some angle iron on a ledge in the skatepark in halifax,canada....hitched up on it and came down from about 6 feet right on my shin...shaved the shin bone from mid shin to half way up my knee cap....a flap of skin and 4-5 inches of exposed shin bone....lovely stuff.....couple hundred stitches and i couldnt walk for 2 months

ummm ya.....slightly OT there....lolz

glad you didnt get hurt in the crash....im a pedestrian....i just have to make sure i dont get hit by a car....

Somehow I don't think I should go skating anytime soon. Also makes me want to buy a cane for winter walks

Plus, a cane is a pretty awesome defensive weapon. BAM

I hit my arm good (fell straight back down on it) in 2005, no fracture that I know of. I was walking immediately after but then nearly blacked out although it wasn't really painful. This year I hit it sideways; there was only a tiny fracture and it was completely healed in a month. My elbow does pop occasionally though.

Yep for me it's kind of like real life bullet-time Max Payne style. I don't know if it works this way for everyone but it would be cool if I'm the only one.

Anyway Square King that probably was not the best time to take a drive...unless you have a previous career of rally racing. BTW I found that PC sim racing has made me a pretty good driver albeit an aggressive one.

There was a movie of it too. A friend of mine wanted to rent the Crash that won the Oscars a few years ago and somehow ended up with this instead. Boy, was she surprised.

Yeah, that Crash movie that came out back in 1996 with James Spader is an interesting and sorta sexy erotic film. The massive scars that the appear on both of the lady's legs is quite something -- prostethic special effects magic at it's best. Director Cronenberg and his usual cinematic methods of telling a story with this Crash film. The letterboxed NC-17 rated version appears from time to time on IFC. ^_~

Heh....I've been in a few accidents. In fact....let's see.

#1 - Drove car into cliff face at night on corner - car totaled, wheels embedded in frame, rear view mirror found in trunk (no idea how), car crushed in 2' on driver's side starting about 2" behind driver's seat. Strangely...no windows broken. Thanks rainy night and bald tires. Walk 1 mile to call home collect to get a ride. While gone...people find car, call ambulance, looking for 'survivors'. Have to refuse medical treatment from silly emergency response people. Yeesh.

#2 - Power slid car down embankment and took out 50 ft' of farm fenceline sideways. Filthy gravel. Spend the next day rebuilding fence. Ugh.

#3 - Backed into lamppost. Oops.

#4 - Big Dodge Ram stops in road. Hit Dodge Ram going 60 mph. Sweved to miss it but the left front corner of my car hit the right rear corner of the truck. Flattened my car's entire hood...and engine. Truck's bed folded like a tepee. It also spun around 720 degrees and rolled...landed in the ditch on it's wheels facing the other way two lanes over. That whole slow motion thing is pretty damned wild when ya see something like that. No injuries for either party. BIIIIG ticket.

#5 - Mexican lady in big pickup flat out stops at a yield with zero visible traffic coming....just jams on the brakes. Rear end truck at low speed....15 or 20 mph. Mexican lady gets out holding her neck like she's crippled. I ask her to exchange license and insurance information....Mexican lady gets back in her truck and drives off immediately, oddly not holding her neck any longer. Car still drives....go to work....very embarrasing.

#6 - Truck stops for me to turn left across two lanes of oncoming light traffic, completely blocking my view of a rather quickly oncoming car. Driver of truck waves me through, car hits me...driver of truck mysteriously vanishes from scene to avoid responsibility. Minor though.

#7 - Driving home on freeway, last snow of the year. Semi truck in front of me in center lane kicking up all kinds of shit. Slow down and check lane next to truck, too much snow. Try to move back into lane...car loses grip on snow goes into uncontrolled spin at 65+ mph....into median barricade down a hill. Crush all four sides of car, but do not destroy engine. No injury, no other involved cars. Drive decimated car home by the light of single headlight pointing up into the air, conveniently warning away potential low flying aircraft.

Never had a single injury. I suspect I may be accident prone...but I try not to think about it.

I could never picture myself living in a "city".

It's the same in Auckland city actually. Everyone is in such a fucking rush that people disregard themselves for their objective. Today when I went in, I had this one guy completely ignore me, another throw a "I dunno" back at me, and then finally a Chinese woman who was pretty good with English helped me with some directions. The only time I need to visit town is if I want to go to the arcade in it, or into work. I bumped into Etrian today. :D

I mean, city's always busy and there's a bunch of people, but it feels pathetic and lonely at the same time.

For Elixir,

Sounds like you're one of them country boy hicks, right? Nah, just j/king around. Yeah, living life out in the country is slower and less fast paced alrighty compared to the faster-paced city lifestyles. It's interesting to encounter some slow-ass and really easy going country-type folks who drive at 40-45mph in a 55mph zone. Most folks just pass 'em up anyways. ^_~

I could never picture myself living out in the country again, especially in the states. The fact that you're in the boonies means you have to travel a long way to get anywhere. Are you into videogames? Good luck because the stores near you never have the latest products or get like 1 or 2 of the good stuff(WTF who's the genius who thinks 2 Wii's are going to satisfy a region's demand?) People are also either nice and friendly or horribly xenophobic and idiotic. There is no in between here.

I like the serenity and peacefulness of the Texas countryside but ,like most things, it seems it is ruined by people.

Sounds like you've been in more than your fair share of accidents. Glad to hear that you came out of them without a scrape. Yeah, some of those folks who suddenly stop in front of you when there isn't a compelling reason to do so, those are the ones to watch out for. I always have my left foot resting on the brake pedal lightly just in case if I do have to suddenly stop my car to a complete stop really quick because of stupid fucks in my lane just about ready to smash into me head-on within a few seconds. It's just a matter of being prepared by just a few milliseconds quicker for what can possibly a major accident/injury or death in the upcoming accidental aftermath senario. Or perhaps, it's just my honed fast hand-eye coordination from years of playing arcade and video games. That crucial edge has it's advantages alrighty. ^_~

Of course, advance defensive/evasive driving courses do teach you the best way to get out of possible accident/carjacking senarios but you have to shell out some serious $$$ to learn the tricks of the trade. ^_~

It's just using common sense and not panicking but to remain calm and think of the best way to get out of the on-coming accident senario up ahead. I've had a few of those close call moments of trying to anticipate what is about to unfold and try to save myself from possible injury or death. You've only got one life, so why not guard it with the utmost care. ^_~
