PS3: PS1 shmups' backward compatibility improved at all?

Has anyone tested the PS2's "PS1 problem shmups" on a PS3? I've read (here at Shmups) that Toaplan Shooting Battle runs without its PS2 slowdown issues.

I'm specifically interested in Gradius Gaiden's Stage 7 (black hole stage) issue. Anyone tried these games out?

I can't say I've tested it, but I'm betting it does work fine since the PS3 is rendering the PS1 games using emulation unlike the PS2.
