R-Type stuff in Contra 3?

I didn't notice this for a long time but Contra 3 (stage 4) has a battleship similar to the kind
that traditionally appear in Stage 3 of R-Type Games.

(I didn't notice that the boss part with the missiles is connected to the huge part that flies
over you on the bike.)

Also the boss from the very next stage is similar to R-Type's Gomander/Cyst.

Probably homage. After all, both series draw a little from the Alien and other alien being franchises.

Homage to which now? Both game series started out as walking talking ripoffs of Aliens (and in Contra's case some Predator too)
