Nolan Bushnell's stance on Emulation?

A place where you can chat about anything that isn't to do with games!

Nolan Bushnell's stance on Emulation?

Post by spadgy »

Being very lucky, last night I got a seat at a table at the Video Game BAFTAs! If you don't know, the main BAFTAs are essentially the UK Oscars, so the Video Game BAFTAs are... well... you get the idea.

Anyway, I bloody well got to chat with Nolan Bushnell! Bloody Exciting. I only got a few minutes with him, but I learned two things:

1. His favourite VCS game is Pitfall (not one of his!).
2. I talked about the fact my 2600 died, and he said that essentially, with retro consoles there's no point owning hardware as emulation was so good these days. I wasn't expecting that!

Those two pieces of info might be common knowledge, but if not there you are...

Now this next bit is just me showing off I guess, but here's a picture of a very happy spadgy with one of our grandfathers!

Image

He was lovely.

Also, if you're in the UK you'll have heard of Jonathan Ross - he's one of our most famous TV presenters. (Can anybody think of A US equivalent to give this context?)

Well. I was surprised to over hear him talking about the Dreamcast, so I got involved, and it turns out he loves collecting retro games.

We started to have a good old chat and I learned the following - He loves SNK. He Loves R-Type (but hated R-Type Tactics) and Gradius. He showed me lots of pictures of his console collection on his iPhone, and was very proud of his pictures of his kitchen scattered with consoles. He has an impressive AES collection, and many sealed consoles, and on Wednesday he bought one of those Dreamcasts (Was it a 'Diver') that comes in a droplet shaped TV screen via an eBay Buy It Now auction. I got shown many photos of that. He was a very excited man.

None of that's too interesting unless you know who Jonathan Ross is, but it was really nice to chat to him, and I really get the feeling he never gets to talk about his love of retro games and shmups, as he wouldn't let me get a word in.

It was so surreal to be talking to a huge UK celebrity about shmuping. I invited him to Casino arcade but of course he won't show.

Nice one!

If he comes that will make 5 of us in Casino! 6 if you count the Progear moth!

Wonder if he will bring Russell Brand?

seriously, he is clearly someone with a passion for all things otaku and retro.

Jonathan Ross's Japonorama is a must watch program for anyone interested in Japan.

I was aware he was into games, but I'm always suspicious of celebs claiming that - and even if it's common knowledge that he's a gamer. it was still weird to talk with a celebrity about shmups and get shown pictures of his kitchen!

It was far cooler to meet Nolan though!

If your looking for a comparrison I guess Jonathan Ross is to us what Jay Leno, David Letterman is to American TV

Anywho that's very cool I generally think Ross is a W***er of the highest order but I may give him more props now I know he is also a gaming geek.

Sounds like you had something of an awesome evening & I am teh jealous.

Because when you're a game's jouralist, you here a lot of celebrities talk up their love for games because they are presenting an award at some event, or they have their name on a box, or star in an advert. Konnie Huq. The presenter of the new Gladiators show. Michelle Marsh. Jimmy Carr. Carol Vorderman. Even Anne Robinson, who had previously blasted games.

my gran used to be mates with jimmy carrs mum and i stayed at his mum's house when it was my great grandads funeral due to lack of space at my grans house (this was around the time he was on the same program as alig) me n my bro stayed in jimmys old room and there was a megadrive and a collection of games (streetfighter 2 and the 2 6 button joypads caught my eye!)

wow thats pretty awesome! I never knew Mr Ross was into games and stuff lol even though recently he was suspended for something which was past the border line in comedy he still is one of the best the BBC have.

I've got pics of his wife too ;) and shes has a banging pair of cobblers on her and imo probably the reason he put a ring on that finger

Ross used to come into CEX in Rathbone place regularly when I used to work there. He always used to go nuts and just buy shedloads of PC Engine stuff. I remember him handing me his Platinum card on several occasions.

Nice score on the Bafta's Spadge, did the mag send you to do a write up?

Pure luck mate. The mags I work for now, or rather the publisher of those mags, was media partner. I've been the past two years, but just gone in the press pit room immediately outside. First time I puncture the inner sanctum.

VCS emulation is good? I never got Stella to work, and the others I tried are either ancient DOS command line shit or otherwise unusable

Good stories though, and I agree, strange looking woman o_O

It's called MESS. IIRC, it does VCS stuff pretty well.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Woss's wife's baps are implants. Shame, but she's still hot.

spadgy - You should have mentioned 'Quartet' to Woss. He used to go to play it often at Las Vegas arcade in Soho in the 80s. So I've always known he's been into the retro stuff.
