Worst shooter ever!

Post by corbie »

I made the serious mistake of taking a chance on a $50 Guardian Storm pcb and even at $50, it was one of the biggest purchasing mistakes I've ever made. I couldn't even make myself stick with this game long enough to finish it out. It literally stayed in my cabinet for less than 4 hours. Anyone considering this piece of garbage shooter need be warned. STAY AWAY!

BTW, has anyone else played this travesty?

Has nothing to do with your topic, but I Just checked out your website, bullet666.com, and I really dig it, the only thing I was wondering while looking through it was how come you have "High level of difficulty" as a con for every review I looked at?

I guess it depends onthe person, but I look at high level of difficulty not as a con or a pro, just something the game is, especially in a shmup. just my two cents, take it for what its worth.

Great site though.

The pages were templates of each other and I'm still changing each one to fit the game. The page is brand new and I'm still working on getting everything sorted out. I'm like you, the harder the better. :D Keep checking back and I should have all the kinks ironed out within the next week or so. I've been busy at work so I haven't had much time to work on it over the past few days.

I've wanted to have an outlet for my shooter reviews and this page gives me that. Shmups.com is the king of shooter sites and always will be, but I thought my site could be a nice second opinion. I'm trying to cover some reviews that you can't find currently on shmups.com. I dug out my Gizmondo and Jaguar yesterday so I could review a couple of the obscure ones from those systems.

Nah that was Guardian Force

Also, let's not forget about Guar Force, the Morrowind shooting game!

LOL, Macaw likes Eight Forces and Zing Zing Zip.

Also, you might be thinking of Guardian Force instead of Guardian Storm. Guardian Force is a great game. Guardian Storm is a completely awful game made by Koreans, you can check it out as Sen Jin in MAME along with Stagger I/Red Hawk and Twin Action. They are very lazily done, even ripping off music and graphics and attacks off each other. Overall they feel like a broke man's early Psikyo or even more accurately, a broke man's NMK. IIRC Thunder Dragon 1 is not too bad of a comparison.

PS: D-Force is much worse than this game. 8)

Oh, that thing. I could never get that working in Mame, so I didn't bother.

If D-Force is worse than Guardian Storm, I shudder even thinking about it. I literally had to make myself stick with it in order to review it. I'm going to rip this game apart. There are very few games that I can't find at least one nice thing to say about it, but this one was garbage. And that soundtrack will haunt me for some time to come. :P

Oh and ROBOTRON I love your Viewpoint avatar. One of my all-time faves.

Omega Fighter is about twenty billion times better than Galaxian.

Gardia (Sega/Coreland 1986) is rather ugh also.

The console-only shooters mentioned in this thread take the cake though. If you don't have any talent and not enough budget to get a release into the full arcades, why not go for a commercial retail release? :o Worse than the early doujins, which are somewhat filtered by people not sharing crap games.

I played this and it wasn't THAT bad. I mean, it wasn't any good either, but to call it the worst shooter ever is a bit of an overstatement. :?

Not sure if it's the worst ever, but Rez is one big pile of shit.

Hmm... the original Silpheed isn't very good [worst shmup *I've* played at least]... could have been great if the enemy bullets weren't so damned fast you couldn't dodge them, and mitigating that by adding a lifebar...

PS: in before someone says RSG, DoDonPachi, etc.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Curses on those posters that mentioned Omega Fighter and Rez!

J/K :) To each his own...

Omega Fighter = Ketsui prototype.

Rez = Unlike anything you have played before.

SKULL FANG on the Saturn was a big steamer IMO.

Are you serious?
It's one of my favorites ever!

I'll name a very, very, very bad one: Xenon 2.

Guardian Storm isn't the worst I've ever played, but it looks and sounds terrible considering when it came out.

Silpheed: The Lost Planet is just a bit dull. Too many gaps in the gameplay where you're doing nothing other than admiring the (admittedly good) graphics.

Sengeki Striker is maybe my least favourite. Partly because I suck at it, but the scoring system is too inconsistent. I understand that you're supposed to shoot down aircraft so that they crash into ground based enemies, but it's pretty impossible to pull that off on a regular basis.

Mission XX isn't at all bad, it's only equipped with a rather steep treshold for "you beginners". :D

Earth Defense/ Earth Defend - on the Atari 2600 this might
have been a game with good graphic and sound.

Too bad this game is for the Sega Genesis.

Compared with Earth Defense " Divine Sealing" looks
like a quality shmup .
