Which Saturn Shooters to buy with a 200$ budget?

Post by Under Horizon »

I'm just getting into the Saturn Shooter scene and I am looking for suggestions. Don't say Radiant Silvergun  I will have to hold out a bit to buy that bad boy. Ideally I would like at least 4 games but suggest whatever you think is best. Thanks

Galactic Attack
Darius Gaiden
Thunder Force V
Soukyugurentai
(there's a $30 BIN auction on eBay right now)

Those four should be easily obtained for less than $200 altogether. But, here are some other games to consider if you can find them for a decent price...

Metal Black
Darius II
Gradius Deluxe Pack
Salamander Deluxe Pack Plus
Kyukyoku Tiger 2 Plus
Thunder Force Gold Pack 2
(it has the tough to find Thunder Forcer AC on it, with TF4)

There are other great ones, like DoDonpachi, Hyper Duel, Blast Wind, RS, etc., but they're not easy to find cheap usually.

It'd be a bit tough to squeeze in under 200, but I'd see what kind of a deal you could score on Batsugun, Battle Garegga, and DoDonPachi. The former two are awesome (and Saturn-only) ports - the latter isn't as great, but is still worth buying, and a bit cheaper. I'd put Soukyugurentai, Twinkle Star Sprites, and Cotton Boomerang as your next-best options.

I'll also shameless-plug/link you here. ;)

CIT's list is very good.

The DonPachi's are great games, but their Saturn conversions are bad.

By the way, Layer Section/Galactic Attack are the same game.

Without a doubt

Battle Garrega $80?
Batsugun $60?
Soukyugurentai $30?
Layer Section $20?

Really though there is an easy $1000 you can spend on superb Saturn Shmups.

The Psikyo games, the horis and cute-em-ups, the crazy expensive ones and even the mid range ports of other classics like Sheinryu and Gekirindan.

Is Hyper Duel worth the $120 + price it goes for. I've heard it's a bit overratted

I was hoping that in this day-and-age that Radiant Silvergun would have been exposed for the weak game that it is, but it seems that it still carries legendary status among newcomers. I know that there are still people that really like it but bottom line is it's not fun and only for a certain type of shooter player. If you're just getting into shooters don't bother with it for a while.

Batsugun and Layer Section are far more friendly to those new to shooters in terms of difficulty, scoring systems and pleasing presentation. Battle Garegga is excellent but I think is an acquired taste and something you'll appreciate more after you've played shooters for a while. DoDonPachi is also good in whatever form you decide to play it.

rsg sucks
Get at least Battle Garegga and if you don't own a ps, get DonPachi or DoDonpachi (or both :D ) and take it from there.

RSG doesn't suck, it's just not worth the infinite amounts of money it's going for on eBay. Seriously, if you have a 3GHz PC, just emulate it in MAME [0.128, 0.129 made RSG run really slowly...], frameskip of 6 or 7.

Also Layer Section [Rayforce] is a must have. It's also pretty cheap, IIRC.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

The definitive must have saturn list for 200 dollar budget

Strikers 1945 2 $25
Battle Garegga $70
Sengoku Blade $40
Batsugun $40
DoDonpachi $40

roughly $215 but you wont regret any of these purchases!!!!
The cave whore count in this thread is unbelievable!!!

I agree with you that RSG doesn't suck, but playing it with a frameskip of 6 or 7 sure would. If you're going to emulate it, just play the Saturn port in SSF.

Anyway, my favorite Saturn shooter is Batsugun.

rsg sucks
no it doesn't, especially if you bought it for 49.99 when it 1st came out like a normal person. folks always rag on RSG but it's not like treasure made that game and sold it for 200+ dollars. It sure kicked ass when playing it for the 1st time at a regular price.

sapphire sucks if you want to start pointing out a high priced crappy game.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Get stuff that isn't ported to MAME. For example, I don't recommend Garegga as Garemame exists. Things like Batsugun, which aren't properly emulated still, are a good choice to go with.

Garegga, Batsugun (not worth 40$ though... try 70$), and DDP. Those 3 should set you back 200$, but with countless hours of fun :)

If you can squeeze in Dodonpachi and maybe Game Tengoku, you should. But otherwise the above list is about as good as it gets for a $200 budget.

...arcade games, pick out one you can do ok, one you can do as opposed to a whole bunch of em where you don't know what the hell you're doing...
If you don't know what you like, here's an ok place to start for advice: http://www.angelfire.com/al2/jp/

Otherwise, find 1 game you think you'll be interested in and get that. Play the shit out of it or until you are no longer satisfied, sell it, move on, and buy the next game you had in mind.

Speaking for myself, I could only recommend a couple:
Batsugun, Thunder Force 5, G-Vector, and perhaps the Gradius Deluxe Pack. Otherwise, most the games are expensive or available elsewhere. In the case of Batsugun & G-Vector, on the Saturn is as good as it can get.

You should grab Batsugun first before anything.

It's a fun little game, but good lord no it's not worth that much money. Although I did pay more for it myself. But i'm pretty obsessive.

I picked up Hyper Duel last year for nearly that much. It's a fun shooter, but I don't think I'd pay that much for it knowing what I know now.

Would you believe me if I said I bought Hyper Duel (and Blast Wind for that matter) just so I can hear the soundtrack? lol I'm serious. I'm a VGM nut!

But I'm glad I bought it, though (paid around $90 for my copy from a shmups.com member). It's a fun and challenging shmup that I find myself going back to every now and then. But since you're on a $200 budget, I wouldn't recommend spending almost all your loot on it. There are better shmups for the Saturn that are far cheaper.

But, dude, trust me. You want to get BATSUGUN first.
