Egret 2 making loud high pitch ring NEED HELP

Post by whitey »

I just moved my egret 2 down a flight of steps and now there is a loud high pitch ringing comming out of it. It kinda sounds like the sound is coming from the monitor or chassis. The machine is not even plugged into a wall so I don't know how it is making this noise. I hooked up a PCB and the monitor seems to be working fine but the loud high pitch ringing wont go away.

Any ideas what is causing this and how I can fix?

I hope it's not the flyback.

This may sound stupid - but can a LCD do that kind of noise without even being on?

Yes, I attempted to discharge the monitor before I did it but did not hear any crackle or pop so I guess it was already discharged?

Not plugged into the wall? It makes the sound when not plugged in?
That narrows it down greatly, to...
Your ears are broken, the monitor is loosing vacuum, slowly imploding?
If it's making sound when not plugged in, something is REALLY loosing preasure or slowly exploding or something.
When it's on, I think the coils on a monitor can make noise if the rubber nubs stuffed under it come loose- can also cause convergence problems. I've heard of people jamming a toothpick in there (it physically resonates).

It really shouldn't be making a sound when unplugged... Are you really sure about that part?

ok i'm no expert but if it is actually unplugged, and you've left it sitting unplugged for a while and discharged it, I'm going to guess that somehow there is a leak from the tube, however that would usually be a gassy hiss/swirling sound, like a big metal tank of compressed air, but maybe if its really tiny it could be a high pitched whine, like when you have hot liquids in a thermos and the lid isn't completely tightened.

is there a thermos with tea sitting nearby?

I really hope it's not a cracked tube or something, even a fine crack.. I do know that it can happen though as my old sony tv got knocked around just a bit too much once while moving it and then I heard a long hiss and choked on some really foul smelling/tasting stuff.

*EDIT*

it also could be that the new location you moved the machine to, it happens to be getting some radio or other type of interference coming through the chassis, but thats a bit far fetched

nevermind......luckily the monitor is fine. The noise was not from the monitor as I thought it was. It was an alarm on the coin box.

Holy shit! Your Egret II has one of those built-in coin box alarms? My Egret II cab doesn't even have one of those but it does have the proper accomdations for one. You're one lucky dude to have such an alarm setup like that. ^_~

And speaking about the Egret II coin box alarm, is it powered by a special battery or is it a regular 9v battery? Sounds very intriguing, that Egret II coin box alarm device. A reset button should cut that irrtating high pitched whine in a jiffy. ^_~

For captpain,

No, I haven't had the pleasure of doing so. Thanks for the suggestion. Might have to take it into consideration. ^_~
