Recommend a good zombie flick.

Post by Square King »

Seems like there are two camps when it comes to these movies: the 28 Days Later, zombies-can-run-jump-and-scale-fences camp and the Dead Rising/Romero shambling zombies camp. It seems one favors gore and quick thrills and the other favors suspense and tension. I thought 28 Days Later was almost perfect, but I didn't dig the mutated superhuman 'zombies'. I just finished the remake of Dawn of the Dead and it was just OK.

What would you recommend?

Night of the Living Dead is still the best zombie film IMO, and still as scary as hell. Even re-watching it today, the plotting is so audacious and nihilistic it still gets me.

It's definitely in the 'slow burner' category though, depending on your tastes. The zombies are purely incidental, as with all of the 'Dead' films. They could be replaced with any horrifying scenario and the human drama would still make the film just as frightening.

I really like Fulchi's movies, especially The Beyond and Zombie Flesh Eaters (aka Zombi 2) - just the right balance of gore and trash.

28 Weeks Later is pretty cool too, imo. Surprised you didn't like the Dawn remake.

They Came Back is an interesting, alternative take on the genre.

There is the 28 Weeks Later films that sorta continues where the first one left off. A third sequel to the two 28 Days/Weeks Later films is in the works right now. ^_~

God of Vampires is another cult classic worth checking out. The director has spent seven years getting it made. It was shown in it's entirety at the 2007 Shockerfest indy horror/sci-fi/fanasty film festival. ^_~

If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend Dario Argento's edit of Dawn of the Dead that was released in Europe as "Zombi". Much better than the Romero cut, plus Goblin did the soundtrack.

meh...the euro release has 1.5 mins extra footage...mostly gore in zombie feeding scenes....the european one also is missing some of the dialog scenes....

the extended edition is the best one....more gore, more dialog, more zombie greatness

the us version is the worst....

i have to check as i havent watched the US version in a while, but it has the same music, no?

i cant recall

goblin is one of my favorite bands :D

if you like goblin, check out a band called zombi....2 guys making zombie music.....awesome

also check out soundtracks done fabio frizzi and riz ortolani.....frizzi did most of fulci's horror films.....ortolani did cannibal holocaust and fulci's dont torture a duckling amongst others

i love listening to old horror movie soundtracks.... :D

Planet Terror...isn't that part of the 2007 Grindhouse dual film showcase with Death Proof being the second one? I recall that both films of Planet Terror & Death Proof have gotten the Blu-Ray upgraded treatment and just recently came out in the USA. ^_~

Argento's cut is like 10 minutes shorter. I like it cause it cuts down the bullshit. No useless dialogue that slows the movie down, no trite "message", just pure zombie goodness, and more Goblin. That's a winner in my book. According to wikipedia, Romero still stands by the theatrical release as the definitive version and that he said Argento didn't "get" the movie. I think he got it fine. He boiled it down to its' essence and kept the pace up, rather than slow it down in the name of character development. They're all good, but the euro release is definitely my preferred version.

Return of the living dead is my favourite. Its funny, witty, gory and a little scary in places. The 2nd one didn't live up to expectations.

Just popping in briefly to say that 28 Days later was amazing & one of my favourite movies.

The sequel however, my GF and I don't like nearly as much. :? Different director apparently

If you live in the UK or can play Region 2 PAL DVDs, I thought the E4/C4 miniseries Dead Set was fairly good. Flawed, but definitely enjoyable.

Yeah, dead set is awesome, and pretty damn gory, even for UK television  . I love the way it shifts from uneasy comedy in the first episode to out and out nihilism in the last one. Definitely the best zombie related thing to emerge in the last ten years.

Carnival of Souls

I only list it as it falls into the same vibe as the original NOTLD. Forget the crappy remake, however.
