Controller affinity. (List your controllers!)

Post by indstr »

D wrote:maybe a nice new thread. List all your controllers :D
Why not???

Controllers are a very personal thing. Once you get used to one that you like, it can be difficult to adjust to something else. If the controller you like breaks and you can't find another one, it can be frustrating... Playing games with another controller just isn't the same.
That's why everybody should keep stock of 3 or 4 spare of their favorite controller, so they will have them for the next 40 or 50 years even when you can't buy them anymore. :)

I don't know what I'd do without my Hori Anashin. In fact I only have one so I better seriously start thinking about getting spares.

Maybe it sounds crazy to some people, but I think most of you know what I am talking about. :D

Here's my controller list:

1 Hori Anashin PSX controller. Sweetest D-pad ever :)
1 Xbox 360 controller. Awesome for driving games on PC
1 Official PSX controller. [Unfortunately, it is an ASPS unit instead of a Mitsumi so the D-pad was crap. I carved the d-pad out trying to modify it to be more comfortable but I was never successful... So now it is simply missing the D-pad]
1 Madcatz retrocon which I modified for my son to use
1 Gamestop Chameleon [another controller I carved the d-pad out of unsuccessfully. This is how I originally got the idea to do d-pad modding because the d-pad kept rubbing against the chassis]
1 Xbox controller.
1 Madcatz generic PSX controller (for the GF to use)
2 Logitech Wingman 3D joysticks
1 Logitech extreme 3d or something like that... updated version of Wingman 3D
1 Microsoft Sidewinder Joystick (the old kind)
1 Microsoft Sidewinder gamepad
1 other Microsoft gamepad, not sure what it's called
1 Gravis gamepad
2 Saturn controllers
1 Generic PC gamepad with 6 or 8 buttons.
1 SNES controller modified to connect to the PC's parallel port
2 or 3 messed up SNES controllers that I've used for spare parts
2 goddamn useless trackballs (Nyko and Assassin 3d. somebody please buy these)

And... Let's not forget:
IBM Model M clickey keyboard. Possibly the best controller ever :D

.. and probably some others I am forgetting about. Oh man I should have never started this thread because I expect a forthcoming flood. :D

Talk about the controller you love most and why you love it. Personally for me, it is essential that a controller have an excellent d-pad. Thus why I love the Hori Anashin so much. :D

2 original ps3 sixaxis

1 stupid generic ps lookalike pc pad
3 2 player arcade panels on me cabs

2 N64 controllers
1 PS1 DualShock controller
1 PS2 DualShock controller
1 Nintendo GameCube controller
1 iMac keyboard from `98 [which I love, however it's old, so the keys sometimes don't fire...]
1 Gateway keyboard
1 built-in laptop keyboard for a Dell Latitude D500 [and I love it, as this is my main box, and I like keyboards more than joysticks]
1 Logitech WingMan flight stick [which I need to put drivers on for this machine]

I need to get a pad for my computer... I'd get a 360 controller, but the d-pads suck...

3 usb satapads (one official, 2 from ebay)
2 ps2 satapads (one for supergun, one for ps2)
1 360 controller (green)

That's it. I barely touch my sticks since I'm better equipped with a satapad. I'll most likely get the SFIV pad when it's out and that will be just in time for Death Smiles.

1. The keyboard on my HP Pavillion dv5 notebook. It's got the most responsive keys I've ever tried.
2. A couple of standard Gamecube controllers.
3. A standard Saturn pad. Can't stand it but then again, I can't stand pads at all.
4. I've also got one Japanese stick I bought from Ultimarc (Sanwa?) and two Happ joysticks lying around but haven't used them in a few years. In fact, I haven't used the Japanese one at all.

- Homebuilt control panel... Looks like shit but feels great. Has a Seimitsu stick.
- A bunch of different NES controllers (I use the Advantage for the NES)
- A USB 360 controller, which I use for SNES games on my PC
- Model M Keyboard

I use the control panel for 99% of the time I spend playing games.

Just get a PSX --> USB adapter. That's what I do, so I can use my favorite d-pad on both :D

Sounds cool, can we see a pic? I love home built stuff. The more ghetto looking, the better. :) It's all about function over form. Plus, the more fucked up it looks, the more "WTF" looks you can get from your friends. Win/win really :D

(from the Logitech thread)
indstr wrote: I don't know what I'd do without my Hori Anashin. In fact I only have one so I better seriously start thinking about getting spares.
Better start looking now, 'cause I think PlayAsia finally sold out of them not too long ago.
The "circle" button on my "Anashin 2 Turbo Sound" controller sticks sometimes now, so I broke out my brand new spare "Anashin 2 Turbo", and it is so nice to have a brand spanking new controller.

But like you suggested, in 5 or 10 years I'm going to need another, and they'll likely be impossible to find.
Heck, it took me 3+ years to finally find that "Anashin 2 Turbo Sound" controller (used), and over the past 2-3 years I've still been periodically looking for another. They are seriously rare.

btw, after raving about the Anashin controllers in another thread, I have come to realize the wireless Anashin 2 Turbos do have lag ~ buyer beware.

Before I bought mine, I couldn't find a wired one online ANYWHERE. I really didn't want a wireless one, but I settled for purchasing a wireless one from Play-asia. The most crazy coincidence ever happened, and they somehow sent me a wired one!!!!!! It was so perfect :)
Then I was raving about how much I liked it on some other forums, and my friend decided to get a wireless one. A few weeks later he too complained about the lag. :(

I think Hori is making some PS3 pads though aren't they, with a similar D-pad?
Koa Zo wrote:The "circle" button on my "Anashin 2 Turbo Sound" controller sticks sometimes now,
BTW, you could probably open it up and clean that with a Q-tip and alcohol and have it working just fine again. Worth a try anyway

Main controller for 2d is PS2 Tekken 5 modded with Seimitsu stick.
Ascii Saturn stick as well. Someday will get PS2 controller —> Saturn console adapter.

I've bought more controllers for driving games than anything else. Gamepads' analog sticks are terrible because of enormous deadzones. GCN controllers are one exception with a reasonably modern design, not sure about DC controllers.

I do pretty well with an InterAct PSX UltraRacer considering it's a handheld wheel. Parallel port adapter works a treat for PC racers using PSXpad.

Seriously though, I pretty much have default pads with my consoles. For my PC I use some fake Dualshock pad from GAME for PS1 and N64 games and for everything else I use my Saturn USB pad. Oh and I own a VF4Evo stick for my PS2 as well.

Warning, huge e-peniX list approaching. I might even be leaving out a whole bunch that I have just bought for modding and forgotten somewhere.

Famicom - 2x built-in controllers, meh.
NES - 2x standard controllers + Zapper (grey)
SNES - 2x standard controllers
Genesis - 1x official 6-button w/ Turbo, 1x 3rd party 6-button w/ Turbo
NeoGeo - 1x old-style stick, 1x NGCD pad
VirtualBoy - 1x controller
N64 - 2x official controller
Saturn - 2x grey JP, 1x white JP, 1x skeleton JP, 1x Real Arcade VF, 1x US Virtua stick
PS1 - 1x DualShock, 1x ASCIIware stick, 1x ASCIIware pad, ???x bag of official digital controllers, 1x Konami Official GuitarFreaks controller, 1x 3rd party soft dance mat
Dreamcast - (3? 4? 5?)x official controller, 1x MadCatz POS, 1x Agetec stick, 1x 3rd party gun
PS2 - (2? 3?)x DualShock2, 1x 3rd party wireless pad, 1x 3rd party screen pad, 1x 3rd party wireless stick, 1x Guitar Hero SG, 1x homemade IIDX controller, 1x Konami IIDX controller (US)
GameCube - 2x official controllers

PC - 1x Xbox360 wired controller, 1x Genius minipad Pro
Supergun - 1x modded JP-style Saturn pad, ??? pile of modded Genesis 6-button pads.

Favourite pad? Probably the Saturn pad. The stick I mostly use is the Real Arcade VF, which I have modded to NeoGeo output, and from there with homemade adaptors to various consoles.

That actually looks pretty nice

And since iatneH mentioned dance pads... I forgot to mention the wooden DDR pad that my gf and I built!!!

'Course it's 5 years old now and in need of some repair. But still a sweet thing to have. :)

I once made a bench out of wood that could have three people seated side by side. The nice thing about it was that it extended into a table of sorts and on that table I had mounted two Happ joysticks and an asortment of buttons, so it was basically a sit down joystick... When my then 5 year old nephew saw it for the first time he exlaimed 'Two player!', in english. God only knows where he had learnt that.

For consoles I mostly use their standard-issue control pads. Of course I have also used the NES Advantage, and for SNES I have an ASCIIpad. For the MSX I use a rewired Sega 3-button controller, and I use the Sega 6-button controllers for everything else that they will plug into.

On PC I use the original controller that came with my SNES, via parallel port. For this reason, I searched high and low for the fastest smallish laptop I could come up with that still had a parallel port, so I could use it to play shmups at work with tate... (Dell Latitude L400 is what I got)

...so, did you train him in the ways of Ikaruga?

indstr wrote: Hori Anashin PSX controller. Sweetest D-pad ever
looks like I may have put you onto those :)

My favorite controller controller of all time is the ASCii Dreamcast Fighter Stick. The buttons aren't the best, and evidently require rewiring to replace, but the smooth optical stick and built in rumble make this my preferred stick for Zero Gunner, Rez, Ikaruga, well any digital game, the built in rumble just puts those ports over the top. Granted, it is kinda weak and cheesy, but I love how the thing vibrates and makes noise

Indeed you did, sir. And it was only your INCREDIBLY DETAILED description of the controller that is what convinced me I needed to buy one. Needless to say, I did not regret the purchase. Thank you so much. :D

Nuby Street Fighter Ryu PlayStation Controller [US]
Nuby Street Fighter Akuma PlayStation Controller [US]
SEGA Saturn white PlayStation pad [JP]

I generally use stock controller.

In the past year, I have returned to using the NES "brick" instead of the "dogbone"
For Xbox original, I prefer the Controller S rather than the "duke"/"hamburger"
For the Gamecube, I use the Wavebird and for the Game Boy Player I use my Hori controller
For the Dreamcast, I am using stock, but seek the Ascii pad

sonic my man, we gotta get you some arcade stick goodness!

right now my collection consists of;

-custom MAS joystick wired for GCN/PS2/DC, I have a PS2->USB for mame
-HRAP2, octogonal gate, shortened joystick throw and convex HAPP buttons (blasphemy I know but I like the clicky feeling most of the time)
-DC Agetec (thanks Joe T!) with Sanwa joystick. shortened throw JLF/Octogonal gate, and I just put in blue sanwa buttons/balltop as well.
-Dreamcast ASCII Stick, has what seems to be a "click-less" JLF in it... feels weird but plays well.
-Saturn Hori Real Arcade VF... pretty much stock, shortened the throw on the joystick.
-Saturn Hori Fighting Stick SS- replaced micros in joystick and put in sanwa buttons.

other than that I've got some DC controllers, wavebirds, dualshock's, saturn pads (model 1 and 2), DC keyboard, and a metal DDR pad in need of a rewire after I dropped it on the db-25, obliterating the connections.

I think I have too many controllers.

The nicer stuff:
-HRAP w/ seimitsu LS-55 and OBSF-30RG buttons
-Agetec stick with JLF and OBSF-30 buttons (also wired for Saturn)
-Old saturn pad (and a Saturn->PS2 converter)
-2x GCON45s (freaking awesome)
-Driving Force Pro

Less awesome stuff:
-A Gcon2 (rubbish)
-Desert Eagle PSX/PS2 lightgun (worse than the gcon2)
-Dreamcast light gun (also crap)
-IIDX USKOC (modded with microswitches... way too sensitive now)
-White Dualshock 3 (looks nice)

And the usual pile of dualshocks, wiimotes, guitars, whatnot. Last count was over 30 controllers.... don't want to know what it's up to now.

How much would you pay for a new Vectrex control panel?

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

When my Vectrex control panel's internal spring broke, I didn't want to open it up to get it repaired. So it was on to eBay to see if I could find a brand new Vectrex control panel. Found an auction for one and it ended at over $200.00+ USD with my winning it. I realize that trying to find a brand new Vectrex controller brand new 18 years later after it's intial 1982 production run was akin to finding a needle in a haystack analogy. Well worth the $$$ spent to finally get one brand new. ^_~

Even the rare GCE produced Vectrex 3-D Imager Glasses interface with the three 3-D Imager games + three color wheels (circa 1983) included can set one back a hefty several benjamins indeed depending if the set is complete with original packaging and all included paperworks. ^_~

I used to really dislike keyboards, but then I reconfigured the MAME binds and rearranged my room (left handed with monitor previously on floor =P), and, hell, if it gets me to stage 5 DDP with minimal practice, it can't be all bad ^_-

Other than that, dualshocks. I only have one (ONE) that's remotely shmupworthy, but I likes me my dualshock. Gonna suck BAD when it breaks.

Dreamcast controllers, of which I have three, are crap =P I would almost rather use my lightgun for the likes of Gunbird 2 and Under Defeat =P

Gamecube d-pads are tiny, but they work fine, I guess.

Hate Xbox controllers, S or old, first party or madkatz.

N64 controllers lol.

I REALLY need a stick. But I'm poor T.T
