There's plenty of loli anime.

Why not hunt down the Salamander ova trilogy - it comes with Mikimoto's character design. You can't ask for something shmuppier.

it's done in CG, though.

I second Lordstar's comment on Area 88, a masterpiece that must be absolutely seen!

The Claymore manga.

It doesn't have any ships, planes, or sci-fi elements, but it does have some awesome sword fighting, monster slaying action, and somehow avoids a lot of the pitfalls shounen manga tends to have.

And I've never even heard of anyone actually seeing this. I've been trying to find a DVD for quite a while.

It has Vic Viper, too.

But yeah, seconding Area 88. Also: Legend of Galactic Heroes. Few weeks ago I watched the final 110th episode...again. I've watched the whole thing twice now. Lots of hot spaceship-against-spaceship action there. And best of all: no loli in sight!

Neither have I. Got the flyer for it though, bought it from a friend thinking it was for the game. The screenshots look appallingly ugly to say the least.

This might be the most awesome thing I've never heard of. I must find this and view it immediately.

Things we learned from the Salamander OVA: You fare better against the Moai attack on foot and not in a spaceship :)

I haven't watched it yet, just saw a short clip a few months ago and loled at it.

Must-watch:
-Macross Plus: Nice soundtrack, animation and awesome aircraft action. Story isn't that great but it doesn't matter.
-Legend of Galactic Heroes: Large scale space fleet battles and politics, best space opera anime out there.
-Zeta Gundam: Propably the best mecha anime, lots of good action and good story.
-Super Dimensional Fortress Macross: Ignore the 2 newer Macross TV anime, this one is by far better.

Others you might like:
-Cowboy bebop
-Outlaw Star

Can't think of any others right now.

dpful, Have you taken any of these recommendations yet? I think some of them are a bit off but the vast majority are very shmup'ish and good.

Another point for Macross Plus, Super Dimensional Fortress Macross (original series) and the awesome movie. Itano Circus ftw. Gotta love those missile or guided laser missile trails... Ok, time to play Ray Force and Omega Boost now.

If you can, check Mospeada as well. The Invid designs are quite nice (cyclopean and insect-like, quite imposing) as well as the mechas (Alphas if I'm not wrong?) and the powered assault armours+transformable motorcyles.

Salamander anime and Area 88... THANKS (in caps) for this two. Now I have something to watch!

I one-click-buy'd a bunch of stuff from amazon, and started watching Macross Plus, movie edition. Very romantic and cool about dino-birds. I like it. I'll probably get most of the stuff suggested and report back.
Thanks
