If you don't play fighting games, getting started can be a bit weird - find someone who has some genre experience who's willing to teach you (might be a bit harder than you'd think, since some fighting gamers aren't even willing to let up for a second on a five-year-old, and talk it up as a matter of pride) and you'll get the hang of the quarter-circles and dragon-punch motions and whatnot with a little practice. Of course, also make sure you're using a decent d-pad or joystick so you're not making things harder on yourself than they need to be.

I understand how to execute moves but honestly have nothing even approaching a comprehension of when to execute which move and what movements are appropriate in any given situation.

Those moves are a pain to do at first. I always played charge characters (like Blanka, Guile, etc) before I learned how to do the more difficult moves. Maybe try that.

Fireball = 6 oclock to 3 clock or vice versa and button

Hurricane Kick = 6 o clock to 9 oclock and button

Thats if your facing right, its back to front if your facing left.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Most faqs are daunting at first and fireballs and shouryuukens aren't exactly easy to do. Best thing is to find someone who can show you on the spot or watch some intro vids on youtube.

That said, I knew how to throw fireballs since I was like 8yo :P. Where the hell you been the last decade or so?

make sure you hit the attack button at the exact moment you reach the last direction, not after it. i've known a couple of people that had this problem. they hit the the attack button after they put in the right motion on the joystick/d-pad. once they knew that it was from 6 oclock to 9 oclock + button, and not 6 oclock to 9 oclock and then button, they played fine.

I used to play SF2 on the Snes when I was a kid with my friend. In retrospect, we were both totally rubbish, although I had the edge because my method of pad grinding and button bashing was more refined. :o

Over the years though, timing becomes second nature. I first really got into fighting games with King of Fighters. I ordered 97 after seeing everyone play it in the arcade and loving it's style so much I wanted to be good at it. I sat down with an FAQ and completed the game with every team in sequence to learn their moves.

The rest is history - I heart fighting games! :D

Nice video. Anything like that for 3rd Strike? What I've seen is so-so.

The worst one I’ve seen is Ivy’s summon suffering. I have to stare at the controller to even do it.

If you seriously want to learn fighters, I'd recommend getting a stick. Not because it might be a bit better than a pad, but you'll be tempted to go with a stick down the road and then have to totally relearn the way you play fighters. It can be really annoying! just sayin!

Any specific questions? Most FAQs explain the terminology they use so my guess would be you're not interested enough in the games to learn them.

Common stuff:

f,b,u,d = the directions
qcb = quarter circle forward = d,df,f
hcb = half circle back = b,db,d,df,f
dp = dragon punch = f,d,df
360 = full circle done very quickly starting and ending from anywhere
720 = 2 full circles " "

there are quite a few :) but mostly very specific; ie how to kara cancel ken's DPs; how to mask a raging demon with akuma.

best general ones are the ones ripped from the dvd that came with the 3rd strike LE set for ps2. each character done individually, starting with the basics, and ending up showing combos and chains, all with the directions and inputs displayed in real time at the bottom of the screen. which chars are you after?

Last time I checked those videos were up on youtube, also someone from SRK made a great beginners guide to 3S video.

I may actually spend some time practicing some 2D fighters, something I've never really done before (besides finding exploits against the cpu, like the standing jump-kick on Zhangief ect.). I want to be at least somewhat skilled in the genre.
