but seeing as I couldn't find any for under $40 each, I decided to mod one of my saturn pads.
iatneh helped me with some pics of his own genesis 6 button db15 mod, and some ideas for button layouts.
first I tried desoldering the ic on the pcb, but my sloppy work ended up with some missing solderpoints.
So I'd recommend simply clipping off the encoder with something (nailclippers even?) and then soldering to the ic legs.
I used some 30awg solid wire and then covered the whole thing with no more nails glue.

Soldered the vga cable and 30 awg wire and did the electrical tape dance.

As you can see, it's sofa king messy in there....
I could have made the wiring much shorter and cleaner, but I keep breaking thin wire like this when I work with it too much. Yes I know it's ugly.... *Shudders*
close it all up and it's ready to go with my built adapters. Pictured here is my ps2 one. I also have a saturn one.

when cutting and stripping the vga cable, I noticed two rings on the cable. With a bit of cutting, these ended up holding the cable in place perfectly.

Building a neo geo adapter box was a bit different as I wanted a custom layout, and also didn't want to hack up my neogeo extension cables.
Hammond makes some cases with a battery access door. Through there I can access the barrier strip if I want to change the configuration of the 6 face buttons.

Currently the config is like this...
CD
ABC
and we're ready to go!
