Too many damn interests.

Post by power UP »

Yeah uhm. I think I have too many interests, and I never really can focus on one, as in becoming really good at one thing, which is quite frustrating somehow.

My interests include:
Austrian Economics
Shmups
Netgames (Quake, Enemy Territory, Warhammer Online, EvE Online, and some more)
Computers (Coding, robotics, drones..)
Philosophy
Forex Trading / Investing
Affiliate Marketing
P0rn
Drawing
Conspiracy Theories
Horror Movies
And a couple more I can't think of right now.

Do you think having this many interests is normal? I somehow look up to people who can say "I wanted to do this since I was 12"
Also list your interests \o/

That seems like a healthy list. Doesn't seem abnormal to me at all.

Here's mine I guess...

Music
Listening to music
Writing music
Dancing
Indie games
2d platformers
shmups
ball rolling games
computer hardware
philosophy
psychology
physics
running
spatial orientation/ i have a geographic memory. can't really explain this one very well
Jury duty :D

A bunch more other things I can't really think of right now because I'm tired from jury duty :D

If we weren't interested in a bunch of things, wouldn't it be boring?
If more 2D people would go to the 2D Gaming Forum, there would be more people to talk about 2D games with other 2D fans on the tootie gaming forum. It's 2Dlicious. For real yall

depending on where you live that could be a weird list. If you don't live in Austria than their economics would be a weird thing to keep updated on

That seems like a lot to keep up on. I have a wide variety myself, but I don't keep up on all of em all the time:

Gaming (shmups, RPGs, platformers, action, gun games, etc)
Reading (sci-fi and fantasy)
Quantum Physics
Astronomy
Movies
TV Shows
Comics
Surrealist Art
Politics (US and Canadian)
Technological Advances
Music (Metal, Jazz, Alternative, Ambient, old-school R+B)
Animals (mostly rabbits and fish)
Feudal Japan
Evolutionary Theory
Philosophy

I'd say I'm actively looking into at least 2-3 of those topics at any given time. My main focuses are comics, gaming, reading, and TV/movies for entertainment...the rest is interest to a lesser degree, not active research.
<@scootnet> if you were a real gamer, you could jerk it to Super Metroid box art

Being interested in a variety of things is completely natural. I don´t really get what you think your problem is; unless, maybe, you suffer from not being able to dig deeper into a certain topic. But really, enjoy everything that makes you pumped. There are way too many people who don´t care for anything at all.

And by the way, those lists aren´t THAT exotic to begin with. If you were simultaneously into volunteering in Africa, deer hunting, belly dancing, twelve-tone music, vintage porn, theremin playing, snakeboarding, wheel gymnastics, anagrams AND pencil collecting, then I would say that maybe you should focus more on two or three things at a time.

I have a tendency to get really deep into one thing for about six months at a time, then completely forget about it as I move to something else. Right now, my list of interests would look something like this:

Blogging
Local history (particularly retail history)
Traveling and exploring (wish I could do more of this)
Weather

Things like gaming, programming and tinkering with PC hardware are usually on the list, but they're on the back burner right now.

I have a difficult time to focus on all my hobbies…
(financials also make for difficulties)

Video Games
•games playing
•games collection: software and hardware
•strategy guides: reading/collecting/referencing

80s Toys
•Transformers
•GI Joe (3¾ figures)
•Lego
•1:64 cars

Cars
•Mustang/Capri
•Thunderbird/Cougar - Turbo, SC, & XR7
•Obscure Ford (ie. Pinto, Granada, Fairmont, et cetera…)
•wrenching — repair, maintenance…

Basketball
•playing basketball
•watching basketbal (NBA)
•attending basketball games (NBA)
•collecting basketball jerseys (obscure NBA players)
•basketball (NBA) history - draft, stats, heritage…

I am usually only able to focus on one at a time more or less due to time restraints and more so do to financial situations.

I had been spending money purchasing obscure jerseys when I can afford to but have recently moved to getting a few Lego sets (this is going to come to an abrupt halt as the market price are ridiculous!)

I guess it is for good to have variety of hobby. When there is burnout on one, there is always another to fall back on and return to.

For me, it's not that I have too many interests, but too much interest in each of my hobbies, and not nearly enough time to indulge them all :P

It's true, I feel spread between too many interests, to the point where I feel I'm neglecting one while indulging the other. When I see some guys collections on this forum, I wish I could just channel my money and time into one pursuit, but it's just not going to happen.

Shooting games, the playing of and occasional collection of console ports.
Playing and collecting other videogames.
Beer, collecting beermats, beer festivals.
Playing in 3 bands, all of which go on hold for the others from time to time.
Playing guitar, bass, ganeboy, renoise.
Collecting/watching/reading on /writing on Japanese pink films (my longest hobby aside from guitar)
Cycling, long distance walking, camping and other wholesome pursuits.

It's tough focusing on so many loves, but everyone I know who focuses on just one interest is frankly boring (and often creepy to boot), so I guess it evens itself out.

Just a small number of interests, but unfortunately none of them reciprocate the interest.
